  1. Haha Jon. Yes we had lots of fun racing you guys in the RNI. Was always fun annoying the bigger boats that should have been much further ahead ???? Yes our boat is a Young 99. To set up for cruising, we added more wine storage, a bookshelf, staysail on furler and wee solar panel arch on back. Filled it up with as much food and drinkies as the waterline would allow. Have been amazed how well it handles overloaded! We did 2*170 mile days on way to Tonga, and 7 days 23 hours for the trip from Opua. So pretty reasonable time. Really rated our Predict Wind weather stuff via the Iridium Go. It w
  2. There are a lot of smaller boats capable of going offshore. Right now we are sitting enjoying Tonga in our 34 footer. Next to us are are friends on their Beale 33. Further along are Kev and Bec on a Beale 35. To be fair, all 3 boats are well set up and maintained. They are not Trade Me shitters. It will come down to structural and rig integrity as all the NZ boats are pretty old now. As always, buy the best boat you can't quite afford. Spend more on getting a better boat to begin with, than planning to upgrade everything. You will still spend a fortune anyway-just don't ever add it up, and y
  3. Yes we think you should do Vanuatu and New Cal next season. Just hang the water hose over the side as we will need a big white water tanker near us next season.
  4. Yep it is sounding odd. We have been following it on channel 16 as quite close. Listening to helimed earlier- sounded like the chopper guys were questioning why the crew wanted to come off. Funniest earlier they arrived at poor knights. 38m depth, only 40m of chain - next problem for them to be talked through.

    Vor 2017

Should get better breeze further down. We are at southern tip of Barrier now and getting an easterly through the Colville Channel around 12-15 knots.

    Furler

We have a harken on the front and a furlex for the staysail. Both well built and work well. Easy to work on and nz agents handy if any spares needed. Would recommend either. Our boat is 11 metres.
  7. We have also found the ships to be really good. A quick call on vhf, and usually they say yes we have you and just hold your course and we will go around you. It is the fishing boats that tend to like being invisable.
  8. Dont assume everyone has them though. You still need a proper lookout. We had a classic example off Gisborne heading north in June. Ellen on watch said this guys really close. I checked AIS , fishing boat 1 mile away -no drama. She said no he is really close. This debate of course went on for a bit. Poked head up companionway, to see a different fishing boat with net behind about 3 swells away! Lesson of course rely on eyeballs not just all our wizzy electronics. Still rate our new AIS as one of our best bits of kit on board -especially at night to figure out ships and courses. My 2 cents wort
  9. Or just go to your local based supplier and buy the one can of paint you need. That keeps your life simple and keeps the supplier in business for when you need him next - and keeps the NZ economy working.
  10. What was the $600 for? Our Cat 1 inspection in June was around $200.
  11. Matt I take it this was on the Bene? So taking it to the logical conclusion, all returning cruising boats will have their liferafts popped to remove the flares too? That will get expensive!
  12. Would be keen to hear from anyone who has an Evo 100 tiller pilot/package on their boat. It is one of the options we are currently considering for our boat (fin keel around 5 tonnes once we get in full cruise mode), and keen on some feedback on how they work out in the real world. Not really interested in people just wanting to bag Raymarine thanks. Feel free to PM message me as well.
  13. With age comes wisdom! oh and an innersprung mattress in the quarter berth, and an eberspacher heater. Pretty sure we have the best sails on any cruising boat in this neck of the woods too! Looking forward to palm trees the following winter.
  14. Obviously lots of sailors have amnesia. Good luck to all -fantastic list of entries so far. Great to see Ian back for another go in his new Mull 9.5. Nonstop not coming to play- we will be doing the RSI (Round South Island)- will be starting our cruising around then and planning to head to Stewart Island and Fiordland first, before we head up to Northland for the winter.
  15. Wheels shame you were not ready to head south earlier. We helped deliver our friends new boat down Auckland to Waikawa from 9th December. We fluked the only decent window for ages. Left among the Wed twilight fleet, Channel Island at 0130 Thursday, SW 25-30 for a fast ride across BOP, around East Cape 0400 Friday morning, motor down to Mahia on the Friday during the day, light northerly Saturday down to Castlepoint, THEN snotted by strong west/NW around Pallaser on the Sunday morning and a tough day followed. In Tory 0130 Monday morning. So a tick over 4 days. Hope you get a good high come s
  16. Looks like you have had pretty average weather up North this year. We on the other hand had the most amazing weather in the Sounds. Went out on Christmas Day, and back in on New Years eve. 6 days in the top of Pelorus Sound in bugger all wind and glorious fine days, very flat seas too, we turned into a motor boat for most of the time. Perfect fishing and plenty of scallops... wish you were all here...not! Payback will come our way, we are heading up north next year as part of our extended cruise/lazy life for a few years!
  17. We are replacing the dodger on Nonstop (Young 99) and the existing one surplus to requirements. It includes all the SS tubing and mounts. It is still in pretty good order with plenty of life left. Is listed on trade me listing number is 975893288. If you buy it through Trade Me ,we will see IT right! PM if you want some details and photos

    Keel upgrade

Our keel and bulb is the original (except it has had the original winglets removed). Looking at photos of other 1034's on the web (Flying Colours and Oliver Sudden) - both have small bulbs. Are you sure yours has not fallen off!! Good luck with whatever mods you end up doing - they are certainly fun boats to sail aren't they?

    Keel upgrade

Ballystick, really interested in your photo of the keel. It looks an identical fin to our Young 99 except ours has 1140kg hanging on the bottom. If I can figure the technology will try and put a picture up for you soon.
  21. Deb, why did you have to put up the carbon loo seat picture? Ellen just wanted a wooden one to replace our mank plastic one! Look what you have done.
