  1. The easy answer is to just do your own thing. But you can't. If your boat sits on a trailer and is not a sport boat you have no choice but to comply with the nztya rules or you can't even go and race in a mixed fleet. No other type of boat in Nz is tied to the type association in this manner. Keelboats , multihulls and sportboats, even dinghies do not write their own rules and then insist on personally inspecting every boat and rejecting those they feel don't meet their agenda
  2. Leaving aside the outboard issue, they are portable, I'm quite happy to borrow a 7hp to come and race however the politics of measurement can't be ignored. While those boats have been approved it is quite clear some of them don't measure under at least one part of the rule where interpretation isn't contestable, ie measurment deep purple, 44forty and fantail and probably many other boats up here have the correct freeboard, have the correct headroom, have the correct cabin length. It's only their floor space contestable by qualified designers and naval architects due to poor writing i
  3. Yep, I'm coming up to Whangarei weekend after coastal for a regatta. Should be fun to see where the fleet are at prior to Bay Week. I think Elevation is coming plus a couple from BOI and as many others as we can rope in.
  4. Someone is watching...... Actually I worked out I need a 6.032172 so will my 6hp suffice? While the rule says 0.6kw per metre their translation to .25hp per foot is out. I have no problem with carrying a motor, it's the arbitrary LOA thrown together by people that think they know more than designers and marine engineers. That displacement, windage, prop size, torque, gearing, 2/4stroke play no part in determining a safety factor
  5. Was it a super lightweight inflatable?
  6. If storage isn't a problem, keep the big motor. The e motor isn't going to pull you off a situation or run a second anchor out.
  7. A great initiative. Sadly I've got a regatta in Whangarei that weekend.
  8. She's a colourful night tonight. Blowing dogs off chains over here Can't imagine what it's like in NOLA. A few clips circulating that make me wonder how any man made structure can survive it.
  9. If the compound is your local park you could jog around the boat or do pushups while he inspects
  10. I'm not sure you can even do that. Can you take your boat home? Or to the supermarket carpark? Or closest park?
  11. $15000 and 43kg, no thanks
  12. The inspector could go to your boat - but you can't I hope it goes ahead otherwise I'm going to spend a week refunding everyone entries
  13. I haven't written off the idea though and I'm sure I'll address it numerous times before January, but I need to be sure I can motor from Opua to Black Rocks and back against wind and tide with plenty spare. I need a mate to buy one so I can try it out. The Torqeedo is 17.3kg and will last up to 6 hours, a Suzuki 2.5 is 13.5 plus 3.5kg of fuel for about the same range (and if you get short any number of guys around you can probably spare a litre) The Torqeedo will pull apart and store easier. A cover for the Suzuki is $82, for the Torqeedo $370
  14. At the moment, nowhere. Absolute Marine out highbrook are/were agents - or the link above or via syohana https://www.absolutemarine.co.nz/index.php?route=product/search&search=torqeedo&description=true https://electricboat.co.nz/index.php/product-category/electric-outboards/
  15. Yeah I'm told they can often be found floating out the back of Waiheke. How'd you guys go in that last SSANZ race?

  17. Spent a lot of time a few nights ago researching this yet again as I want a lightweight outboard that I can easily store below in regattas that allow it. I have 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke but until I sold the Dragon I used the 2.5hp Suzuki 4 stroke a few times and it pushed us fine and fits in the locker. After many hours research on here and sailing anarchy I've decided to just get another Suzuki The torqueedo is attractive for the ease of pulling apart to store but not much lighter and if you need 2 batteries heavier. Just way too expensive, even the carry bags are ludicrously expensive
  18. By comparison our accomodations are salubrious forward double, Mid-ships saloon with storage and owners double cabin under the cockpit The prod tube forms a hanging locker. You hang stuff over it to get less wet It really opens up with the plate down
  19. A pilgrimage to the big island is definitely on the agenda. Discussed it over alcohol with Paul Davies . I was thinking either Nelson or Waikawa regattas. But anything is possible. Not this year due to Covid uncertainties. Will have a look at notice of race. Long way to drive to find out you're excluded As I understand it there is no sport trailer yacht division. We have a 300kg bulb, legal bunks, stanchions and lifelines, no ropes down below but if they apply the same rule as they did to Fantail then we don't even qualify as a sport trailer yacht. Our sistership 44Forty has a TY rating b
  20. That's very cool thanks Matt. New halyards are in process with a drop in size for the kite (sorry crew). Some good ideas there Always amazes me how the NZTYS embrace the turbo elders despite their record of capsizes and sinkings but reject the north island designs of Shaw, Elliott and BBW (and probably others) Then again if 2020 accounts and scarcity of published minutes are anything to go by it seems they do nought but spend more than they earn galavanting over the country. Enabled by Yachting NZ to be sole arbitrator of the TY rules despite coming up with nothing in the latest
  21. Better indication of sizes and dodgy bits time to replace
