  1. Not the weekend but.... Sailed Jonquil back to Whitianga Tuesday/Wednesday. Predictwind said we would be motoring all the way but we sailed almost all the way (used 20 litres of fuel) Left Auckland at 3pm Tuesday, got to Port Charles at 1am, left there at 7am, home 1:30pm, Sailed in the local race at 5pm. She's a little beauty and deceptively fast.
  2. The Auckland Anniversary Regatta will always happen. It's a big part of council and ports feel-good factor. In trouble will be Bay Week and lots of other events that have to pay their way. The cost of running these things is just crazy.
  3. Pretty major road damage. Knowing there's a body floating around in there somewhere can't be pleasant either
  4. Picked up this cute clinker dinghy from trademe. It has a centerboard and rudder but no rig. Does anyone have a small wooden mast or suchlike under their house.
  5. Motoring over to the floating dock for a purchase survey. Deal done
  6. 30000 miles at 5 knots is 6000 hours, if the stay wriggles each way once per second thats 21.6million cycles not counting time at anchor. time and pressure as andy dupres would say......
  7. Last time i saw one of those was in an Auckland Tauranga race off Kennedy Bay. Had 60 knots in it and a whole heap of us ran off with bare poles toward Cuvier
  8. How is the furling drum attached to the stay? The stay, if properly toggled (and i'm sure it is) will naturally sway in an even arc. But if you introduce a hard spot, even for a few inches then you have a fatigue point.
  9. Boat facing west assuming prevailing wind is westerly You can sit inside with the washboards out when the weather is crap You can often raise sails in light breezes to check them Morning drinks are in the sun Boat facing east You can open the hatch and get breeze/sun into the boat after sailing Backing into the berth is upwind Afternoon drinks are in the sun Motorway dust will get you everywhere, even on the piles. As said, you soon get sick of walking to the end and just as sick of parking miles away.
  10. Sadly closed for good 6 months ago.
  11. Its a big part of why i am selling Deep Purple and moving to a non racing boat. We have been at every bay week since i purchased but this years entries are a third of previous years. No windward/leeward divisions at all other than sports boats. It's pretty clear this will be the last regatta in its "old" format. Trailer yacht nationals in June had 5 entries in A division. i keep an eye on racing numbers and see massive reductions in Auckland fleets. We have attended regattas all over the country but it costs thousands of dollars per event and it's fast becoming not w
  12. I have one (briefcase sized) you can borrow if you get it serviced
  13. Seems a theme with Pons. Also running a regatta that conflicts with Bay Week and Mahurangi.......

The best part about watching the racing in bed with my wife sleeping and the sound off is not having to listen to the commentary.
