    What to do with a damaged boat

    Ross boats are popular and well regarded. I just purchased a damaged one in Christchurch. I'm told it was known as the Frequent Flyer in another life. I try not to be sentimental about things with my plan being to retrieve some gear and sails and then give it a nudge with a digger. However after spending a couple of days cleaning out gear and salvaging what I wanted I began to see the possibilities. It has had a heavy collision on the port side which has ripped out a section of the deck and stove in the rear of the cabin. This shock has been absorbed through the port gunwhale and section of the topside and cabin top and hatch area. The front section of the cabin, foredeck and cockpit appear to be undamaged. I am going to remove the keel next and the diesel and sail drive and then................. Any Ross enthusiast out there? Cedar core construction.

    If the French can race in the English Channel solo, at night,  I'm sure most of us will be able to get to Whangarei. At this stage stop overs will likely be 12 hours, from the time the mid fleet finish. Not planning on making it too soft. Starts will be in daylight only. So if the start is 5.00PM then it will be go. We will have a finish boat at the Barrier and there will be a couple of turns in both of the return legs.

    The Gulf Alone - a 2020 Richmond Yacht Club Innovation 

     

    Single handed racing is a growth area of our sport with the Vendee Globe Single Handed Race, starting later this year, being the penultimate challenge.  For the last four years the Richmond Yacht Club’s Singlehanded Series, sponsored first by Sail IQ and then by Vining Marine, has been the premiere single handed sailing event on the Auckland sailing calendar. Fleet size has remained fairly constant over those years with approximately twenty two skippers  participating each season.  As our series has matured there has been a growing demand to extend the level of challenge from shorter harbour courses to longer destination races and to include the occasional night race. In 2016 a single handed division was added to the Coastal Classic. As most competitors know these longer races are not only a test of a skippers stamina but also decision making and both personal and boat management skills.

     

    Looking forward to this coming season, the race committee, supported by our series naming sponsor, Coolstore Construction, has agreed to the introduction of a long distance weekend single handed race regatta which will capitalise on the club's current Route 66, as leg 1.  After a compulsory stopover, the fleet will restart for the leg across to Port Abercrombie, on the Great Barrier, and after a further compulsory stopover, race the third leg back to Auckland. 

     

    This event will suit those looking for adventure and challenge and the experience of racing longer distances solo. The sailing instructions will be developed shortly but now is the time to put a ring around the 26th February - 1st March 2021. This is an exciting development for our solo series and an event which we anticipate will cement itself into the Auckland racing calendar.

    Richmond Yacht Club and presents the RYC Coolstore Construction Singlehanded Series.

    You don’t need friends or crew for this one – participate in 11 races that comprise the Singlehanded series.
     
    You get to battle the elements and sail a range of courses into the inner Gulf, including long distance and multi-day weekend events.
     
    Whether you are an old hand or a new bee; the series is open to solo sailors of any skill level with extras and no extras divisions.
     
    If you are a new bee and just want to have a taste of what Singlehanded sailing is all about – partake in a Singlehanded Race; there are 2 to choose from or you can do both.

    Armare Solo weekend – Sat 5 Oct and Sun 6 Oct

    Get your entry in now for this great fun weekend. It is Race 1 & 2 of the Vinings Single Handed Series. You can do just this weekend or the whole series if you like.

    Start by North Head sail up to the lovely waters by Whangaparaoa Peninsular to finish off Gulf Harbour marina where we will all park up for the night. There we will all enjoy a few beers, a feed and some tall stories with the team at Gulf Harbour Yacht Club. The next morning we'll start off the marina and make our way back to finish off Westhaven.  Prize giving will be in the PCC club rooms that afternoon.

    If you would like to enter just the weekend of 5/6 Oct, please send your entry form to the PCC office. If you're keen on doing the whole Vining Series then enter at the Richmond YC.

     

    Day 1 Sat 5 Oct     Single handed No extras - start 1100hrs (yellow flag)

                                 Single handed Open Div – start 1110hrs (white flag)

    Richmond Yacht Club presents; The Vining’s Single Handed Series.

     

    If you’re interested in the ultimate sailing challenge then enter this years Vining’s Single Handed Series, hosted by Richmond Yacht Club. Entries  are now open. The first two races, hosted by the Ponsonby Cruising club are only a month away. Time to get the boat transitioned to SH mode. Once again we are fortunate to have Vinings, Mariner and Kiwi Yachting as series sponsors, Ponsonby Cruising Club, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and Devonport Yacht Club partnering with Richmond, to cover the ten race programme, and new shirts. Some of us are getting quite a collection.This does allow for drops. When organising the courses we have tried to reflect competitor interest in a full mix of short and long courses and will still run an extras and non-extras divisions. Once again the Route 66 and the night race to Mahurangi, both Richmond organised races, will provide that added challenge.

     

    The opening weekend’s first race will take us on a longer Gulf course finishing of the Gulf Harbour Marina. Gulf Harbour Yacht Club will be the host club for that evening. The race home on the Sunday will finish at the Westhaven tower. I will send the sailing instructions by email as soon as Grant has finalised the courses. Remember where Piripiri is? Just a clue.

    Would be helpful if you could get your entries completed sooner rather than later so we can size the shirts.

     

    RNI fuel requirements

    The required range is not unreasonable Jon. I guess it's also about thinking the long game if you get into trouble too. The shortest route may not always be the best. We had thought of motoring around East Cape and then down to Tauranga but would have to withdraw from the last leg and it was against the prevailing weather. Going back was the best option for us at that time.
