Actually the problem is that he DID make a comment, just like you are and the Marin guy that started plus those that support it by downvoting anyone calling it out. There is a place for this toxic posturing, its called small talk. How about all the political commentators, conspiracy theorists, ZB aficionados et al politely retire to their own section and duke it out there. Its always the same players, (and their enablers) the same opinions and the same nasty culture and result no matter the subject. In this case the discussion was about a very experienced NZ yachtie, sailing through waters controlled by another country under covid restrictions when you lot dropped in with your ugly little bunfight.
On that, I admire the practicality and seamanship of the  man- its a tough journey with a small window etc etc BUT and its a giant but, he is doing against the express wishes of the Canadian govt so that sends a message and not a particularly good one about all involved. Ultimately one could take the view that he's a greedy selfish man, greedy for his conquests, another notch on his belt, greedy for the experience as if he cant wait or do something else, and selfish because of the potential fallout and consequences for others who may wish to follow behind with hardened rules etc.
TBH, I dont really know what to say on here about him as I am a bit of a rebel about govt overreach but if some cruiser announces their intention to land on the one of the NZ's offshore sanctuary  Islands Im pretty sure we would all be jumping up and down.

Sorry Steve, I don't agree. Looking at the sea miles completed and the number of accidents, modern shipping is very safe. Much safer than it was in the days of questionable quality paper charts...
All the gear in the world does not help if it is not on, ignored, or used incorrectly. Complacency and inadequate training are the two main issues. And the skipper is ALLWAYS in charge, electronics and mechanical devices are simply tools to help him do his job.

Agreed, and to sail in another countries waters without their permission is to invite arrest and imprisonment. Possibly confiscation of your vessel. His risk, he must accept the consequences. Unfortunately his actions can have consequences for others following his path at a future date, even post covid.

it's pretty major to accuse a group, of currently practicing something they stopped doing hundreds of years ago
    where would it ever end?

To enter most countries you need a Zarpe. This is a certificate of clearance from your port of exit. Without one, you may not be allowed to enter another country.

Because it reinforces the idea that Covid 19 is not a real threat, that it is being used by the government (s, not just NZ) as a way of controlling the population, for their own benefit. Your reference to JA as "dear leader" also reinforces this idea. If you genuinely believe our government is communist, then you have a misguided view of what a communist country really is.
Feeding the conspiracy theorists is not beneficial to this site, sailing, or anything useful that I can see.

HT, I reckon because its a single cluster, + odds and ends from Isolation units. I don't think Level 4 is justified, and fortunately neither does the Govt. Its only 2 more working days....
IMO the Govt is doing the right thing

KM, Ok, again, keep to the site rules. IMO you should either enlighten us as to what our errors are, or not post.
To accuse Biden (or anyone alive) of being, or appearing to be a slave beating plantation owner is completely out of place. He was not there. We are all pretty much aware of what happened in the past, but if your knowledge surpasses ours, then please let the education begin. I’d be the first to admit I’m no history professor 👨‍🏫.
Regressing to your attack mode, not only is the sign of someone losing an argument, but it will get you banned from the site. Being this will be your third go, next time is permanent.

    Hey Mr. @Knot Me... maybe
What US history did I get wrong when I wrote what is below? (Always trying to learn things)
And Mr.    @Knot Me... maybe  You wrote "Actually worse than that when AJ demonstrates such deep ignorance of his own countries history."
It should be "country's" (possessive), not "countries"
I'm not a great historian, but my grammar is not too shabby.

Might be a good time to update it. $2600 for a B&G wireless (mast unit, rest is wired) Triton 2 depth/speed/wind pack. Comes with masthead unit, receiver, Triton 2 display, N2k starter kit, DST (depth speed temp) thru hull.

Most 'safety' rules are primarily for your own benefit. The lockdown rules are for the greater good, i.e. to bring a benefit to the wider society, but it only works if everyone does there bit. And that is regardless of if you agree with the rules or not.
Like I said before, I don't see a problem with going sailing.
But its the govt's ability to manage it, and the time required to assess any decisions. In the big scheme of things, SME's on the verge of bankruptcy, wide spread job losses, family violence and suicides, I just don't see being able to go sailing ever registering on the 'must spend time thinking about it list' of any worthwhile decision makers at the moment. They have far bigger issues to deal with.
And I must say, I'm getting a bit bored hearing people whine about the same thing. Adapt to the conditions, register your boat as a commercial vessel, and go sailing. Get a wind surfer and go sailing. Not worth the time, cause its only a 2 week lockdown this time? STFU and go sailing the weekend after next...

Its so easy to be an armchair critic - you don't have to take into account conflicting needs, the reality of balancing health and business and social and other interests.  You just have to blindly and noisily criticise, preferably with out balance or facts getting in the way.
Here's some facts.  COVID-19 is an entirely new virus - unknown less than 9 months ago.  Its incubation period wasn't really understood until February.  Its infection rate not really understood until March.  And yet, by end of April, New Zealand had managed what only two other industrialised economies world wide had acheived - effective elimination.  Both those countries have since had a second wave.
We have been greatly assisted by geographic isolation.  But we also isolated, tested, tracked and traced, and quarantined where necessary.  Isolation alone only limited new inbound cases.  All the other steps closed off the internal spread.  Almost.
And its almost because there is NO 100% effective way to erradicate a virus like C19 without vaccination and its resulting herd immunity.  The best any country can hope for is to manage the risk.  And thats what we did.
Having got case numbers down and controlled transmission, we moved to restart society and along with that, our economy.  The order is important - a society agrees on an economy, not the other way around.
That restart was not without risk and our government has recognised this.  They developed a plan and it has been avialable in plain sight since mid-July.  It was released at a press briefing.  Its no secret.
The plan explicitly stated that there is a real risk of a second wave, not if but when.
The plan discusses how you manage that wave in the context of keeping society and hence the economy as healthy as possible
Like any realistic plan, it is focussed on managing risk, not eliminating it.  It allows that sometimes the plan or its tasks will turn out to be wrong or misguided and it will need review and correction.
The actions of the government and various ministries are consistent with that plan.  The path being followed now is entirely consistant with that plan.
You should go look for it.

Except that the covid tests have quite a high false neg or false positive result. So a single test, while indicative, is not conclusive. Multiple tests are required to be certain.

If they went quiet and weren't updating the country on a regular basis they would be critisized for being absent during a crisis.
If they didn't extend the wage subsidy they would be accused of destroying the economy.
If they do extend the wage subsidy they are accused of indebting future generations.
Is there any possible way the current government could manage this situation to appease you?
Ps I think I know the answer...
