  1. Something wrong with the Line results in Div 1. Krakatoa cannot be first.
  2. After 16 days sailing, the fleet has now reached the first gate at the Canary Islands. The leaders are sailing in trade winds with spinnakers up doing 8 knots. We have one more withdrawal, and 3 have major issues with their self steering. Kevin Farebrother, an Australian former Paratrooper who has made three successful assents up Mt Everest, conceded on Sunday “I’m not cut out for solo sailing.” He told race organisers that he could not contemplate sleeping below decks. “For me it is like getting into the back seat of a moving car to sleep when no-one is at the wheel. As a result, I’ve h
  3. The barnacles are horrendous at Opua. One boat recently scraped of 10kgs of barnacles after sitting on a swing mooring there for only a few months over summer.
  4. Interesting interview on RNZ yesterday. Euan Little says the waiting list for Westhaven is 200 boats long. The guy from Panuku says they are saving the hammerhead at Gulf Harbour, and the developers will increase public access. https://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/2018652778/a-tug-of-war-over-auckland-s-marinas
  5. Looks like 2 withdrawals already. The Turkish Englishman has pulled into Spain, and one Italian never got his boat up to scratch to leave in time. Meanwhile the French racer has pulled out a bit of a lead. And the sole woman is doing well in fifth place. http://goldengloberace.com/livetracker/

  10. Also new to Auckland is a Young 13 called The Black Pearl, which has come down from Kerikeri.
  11. Looks like nearly all the boats pulled into Kawau. Only 2 boats continued were Wild Oats and Clandestine Jet, according to the tracker.
  12. Fair enough. He had been warned, and had to be rescued. Good to see MaritimeNZ trying to make our boaties a bit safer.
  13. OK, so it's "MoonShine". Much bigger than a Harmonic. Shane is moving up in the world!
  14. There is a Harmonic called "Mandolin Wind". Could be his boat?
  15. Yes but Antaeus only got fined $200, and they said that was the maximum they could impose.
  16. Apparently doing 27 knots, but not keeping a good look out near Waiheke. Wrote off another fizz boat worth 55K. Well done MaritimeNZ on policing the rules! https://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/public/news/media-releases-2018/20180413a.asp https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/103075217/power-boat-skipper-fined-5200-after-crashing-into-capsizing-fishing-vessel

  19. New rule for personal dinghy frames on marina berths. These must now be made of stainless steel, instead of wood. Further increases costs.
  20. Racing rules state that keels must be locked down at all times. So no speed gains with lifting keels if you want to race.

    Mapfre stopped

TTOP now down to 3 knots with Mapre catching doing 10. Under the rules they can't skimp on safety gear, but are allowed to skimp on food. Should food quantities be stipulated in the rules to prevent skippers starving their crew? Most racing rules say you must finish the race with all crew on board, so if Scallywag could have retrieved Fisher, would they be allowed to continue racing and get a place?
  22. Good idea to join PBYC so you can keep your dinghy inside. Burglaries do occur there, so may need a burglar alarm fitted.
  23. Are you sure about that? Auto-inflating jackets that use a hydrostatic trigger, need to be fully submerged to inflate, so could possibly be used by the VOR sailors.
