OK, id like to buy some carbon sheet, say 2mm, to use as backing plates for replacing instruments, when the cutouts are wrong, to big etc.
anyone know where I can buy some?
Thx
Matt
Arts and craft supply shops sell it for about $20 per A4 sheet, or you can buy it online.

Went past the moorings at 3/4 throttle tossing up a 1m wake. Sorry I missed a photo as he went by (he was too fast), but this was him coming back.
+1.
I just showed this photo to the missus and her first comment was - "thats the F*&^knuckle"
He cut us off when we were approaching Tiri channel from Tuts a few years ago. Threw up a dirty big wake as he crossed our bow to close and gave her a major fright.

As a FYI, a couple of the very same people who pestered Helen to put the covenant over Westhaven in the first place have been the battlers in the current shite fight. Good on them for being so tenacious.
Agreed. Its one thing to throw shite from the sidelines, but its a big commitment to jump into the cesspit and wrestle. A big thanks needs to go to them.

From the before and after photos there has been about a metre of sand "lost" from that beach.
Would that be a normal erosion during winter for west coast beaches?
I was thinking the same thing.
Either erosion or its floating free as it drys out

We're in the initial stages of planning an extended period of living aboard and cruising NZ and we're wondering what others do to handle postal mail and couriers while theyre moving around? - we dont want to burden family or friends.
A google search and I found these guys www.privatebox.co.nz. From what i can see, they give you a fixed address that they clear the mail from, they'll then scan your mail to you (via email?) and hold courier packages until you notify them of a collection point nearest you.
Just curious to know what others have done and if anyone has used a service like this.

Going to talk to freight forwarder tomorrow and try get some final answers.
Back in the mid 2000's I was given a ballpark number of $30k plus cradle for a 42fter, hence sailing was a no brainer.
IIRC, duty no longer applies but GST was payable.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated.
I took a look over the weekend and I was pleasantly surprised at the PBC facilities and the area in general. Now I need to get my head around the boat jobs that need to be addressed if I sever the marina umbilical cord.

Is there anyone here who can comment on the suitability and usability of the pile moorings in the Tamaki River?
The lease is up on my Hobsonville marina berth shortly and co-incidentally AT/harbourmaster have a 40ft pile mooring available in the 3 rows opposite the Panmure Boat club.
I've never used a pile mooring before and always enjoyed the walk on, walk off ease of use with a berth however the close proximity to the gulf and cost of a pile mooring are appealing, hence im keen to hear feedback from others that keep their boat there or are familiar with the setup.
Key things I'd be interested are
1. Security - is there an issue with thieves, vagrants etc.
2. Dinghy and car parking. What and where do others do? Is the PYBC the best option for this? Is it a good club?
3. How easy is it to be setup and use pile moorings? I assume a good quality line bow and stern with some chafe protection is all thats needed?
Any feedback that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

And yes the dish washing liquid works great. But super cheap have a waterbased concrete floor cleaner that works great and you dilute it down which makes it economical. The advantage is it does not leave a trail of foam on the water as the dish detergent does.
Good tip Wheels except that stuff only works on ferro boats

One of these in a bucket hoisted up the mast will give you mobile wifi in surprisingly remote places.

I hate to say it but I had the exact same problem with my old Autohelm (Raymarine) AP and a new 6002 head unit didn't fix the problem I'm sorry to say. My next step will be replacing the old course computer and see if that fixes things.
I've wondered if its caused by a voltage spike from the next step regulator as it only seems to happen when motoring?! but then again, there's very little rhyme or reason to when it happens

But then the big corporates (Vodaphone, AirNZ) have decided that they must have their offices in the marine precinct, the office workers started parking in the white bays, and it become a problem. So the marina imposed time limits, and started fining, which is good cause we want to keep the car parks free for sailors. However some sailors are getting fined which is a problem.
Interestingly, Auckland Transport (Akl City Council) are moving into the Vodafone building shortly hence I wonder where their staff are parking?!.

If you replace the bank, do you need AGM's?
6 x 6volt golf cart (lead) batteries, wired to give 12 volt would give you the same amp hours and cost about half as much by my reckoning.
Just a thought

Swing or pile mooring wanted for a 40fter drawing 1.5m
Due to a deceased estate, we're looking to move a 40ft motor sailer up from the south island and need somewhere to park it other than a marina berth. Prefer upper harbour, Herald Island way but all options are of interest.
Many thanks

Your kids are clearly more advanced than mine.
Our 18 month old was just pleased to be up at 5am drinking milk with the TV on rather than screaming Dadda from the cot. . . . . and so was I

Do these systems have enough grunt ie battery power, to haul a large anchor and chain off a deep bottom? Its a big 12 volt drain on my boat, or would you need to go to a manual winch for this?
I don't hit the button on my windlass without the engine running as it draws some big amperage especially in deep water.

The Thursday of Cyclone Cook. Fortunately we dodged a bullet.
Ahh, the old TBC!.
I'm glad I wasn't the only idiot to get a keeler under that bridge on a flood tide and into a power boating club.
I trust Charlie didnt pickle your liver

The good ones come with a receipt and a 12 month warrantee.
You buy it
You use it
You wreck it,
You return it
You get a new free one, and repeat

The same gig applies when you stay at a hotel or rent a car.
That is, you're required to swipe your credit card so they can pre approve their potential liability should you drink the contents of the mini bar, trash your room and leave, or in the case of a rental car, have a prang and they need the excess money for the insurance.

Moved the boat up to Auckland. Now parked at Pine Harbour.
Hey E,
Just to confirm, is that a Noelex 30/Farr 9.4?
The reason I ask is that my head is telling me we'd get more use for less cost out of a trailer sailor rather than the current 42ft keeler and the Noelex 30 is on my "interested" list as a large, production TL
Nice boat and set-up btw.
Thanks

tuffy - tell me more , haven't thought about domestic but why not..... if they done work on boat I could move to my mancave.....
wheels - i have seen retrofited euro 115's dam its a nice light......
I've been progressively swapping the old 12v filament style bulbs with LEDS as the old ones expire. Its a straight forward bulb swap that works fine unless they're on dimmers . Mitre 10 were selling 5 packs for $20.
IIRC an old 50 watt bulb is replaced with a 4 watt LED

Re the Hella range, one of the several reasons it is so darn expensive is due to the ability to produce a wide bandwith of White light. Many will know that a simple white LED light may look really bright, but for some weird reason, it is hard to see things by the light. This is due to a very narrow bandwidth of light. Or on other words, not enough colours are going into making the white. We see things by reflection. A colour is due to that colour reflecting more of that band of light. Remove some of the light spectrum and we start missing detail. Add to that, some LED's tend to produce a lot of Blue and Blue end of the spectrum is hard fro our eyes to see. So the combinations of above make things hard to see, even though the LED seems bright. Hella have a wide bandwidth which makes the interior seem brighter and warmer and that is expensive to do and reflects the price.
Not sure I buy that explanation Wheels. I can buy retrofit, 12V, broad spectrum LED's for my house from Mitre 10 for $4 and there's no noticeable difference with the old filament bulbs.

Buying on price is, can be, false economy.
About 6-7 years ago me and D1 built a eco micro dwelling that is solar powered. I had a BP made panel of unknown age and I brought 2 more, which was done based on cheap, not the cheapest but they were still at the cheaper end of the spectrum. All were installed the same way and get washed every few months etc. Their life would be pampered compared to one uses on boats.
The BP panel still looks identical to the day we put it up and is going great guns. The other to have lots of signs they are not long for this world and their output is down a fair bit, I suspect the cells are backing up and in a variable manner i.e. some are OK and some are not.
Hence when I brought the panels for my boat I went top end. But then they are also very mission critical so not a situation to skimp in.
Did you ever use that Maxon 12v - 240v inverter with this setup?
I ended up giving them all away and never kept one for myself hence I'm interested to know if it was any good?

7 years sounds pretty good depending on the fine print.
As comparison, my white two-pot painted topsides are 7 years old now and have lost their gloss and are starting to look a little shabby.
