    AASolar - 100W flexible panel - $260 - no warranty and actually would prefer to sell you glass panels which I consider pretty honest.

    Go flex solar - 102W flexible panel - $799 - not clear on warranty didn't look too hard) but openly advertise that you can wallk on them so presumably have a warranty to back that up.

    RV World - 100W flexible panel - $395 - 2 year warranty and a good explanation of the panel construction

     

    Its a complicated world out there!

    Couldn't agree more. There's no second chance once the adhesive takes hold and there's definitely a 'knack' to getting it right, especially when there's hull curvature to negotiate.

  3. Assuming my plastic transducers are Airmar (they were Raymarine supplied) and Pettit Vivid antifouling is Ketone based (its definitely not water-based), then I've been painting them for years and never had a problem.

    Id be very surprised if anyone specifically uses water-based antifoul on their transducers, but I've been wrong before.

  4. I think the key to any autopilot, irrespective of whether its hydraulic or electric, is to have it permanently mounted below deck. Those tiller mounted rams seem to be only useful and reliable when either motoring or in light winds with minimal seaway.

     

    I've been impressed with Raymarines below deck electric ram thats bolted to the rudder stock and course computer with the above deck control head. Its been very reliable and upgrade-able as new technology arrives. I'm not sure of the cost, but I think the whole system is worth about $5-6k? and has some neat functionality (when networked with other gear) such as steering to a wind angle, way point, autotack etc.

     

    Also, being electric, I don't need worry about another system to maintain ie hydraulic

  5. I bought a switch and solenoid (sorry, don't recall the brand but not BEP) from Challenge Boats in Mt Roskill some time ago and its given me years of good service, it doesn't contain a sensor though.

     

    Probably the best and most used safety device on the boat and super convenient. Nothing beats the flick of a switch rather than clambering on deck in the rain on a dark night to turn the bottle off.

So let me get this right, if someone buys this wreck for a dollar on trademe, they'll need to spend $25K to have it salvaged, then another $5-10K for repairs so it floats, then another say $10 -20k to fix the interior damage and probably repair/replace the engine that is now water damaged

     

    So best case $40,001.

  7. I've often wondered at what price point it becomes more economic to scrap a boat rather than resell it as the pieces might be worth more than the whole, especially the way prices are going. Soooo, heres a ballpark estimate on my tub.

     

    At the bare minimum its

     

    - eight decent sized Lewmar winched $4k

    - a volvo engine and saildrive $5k

    - full suite of Raymarine instruments and autopilot $2k

    - 2 tons of marine grade alloy. $2k

    - 3.5 tones of lead $5

    - Anchor winch and tackle $1k

    - Miscellaneous other stuff eg Epirb, radios, sails, oven etc $5k

     

    So there you have it, $24k for an 42fter as parts and scrap.

  8. Can anyone recommend a good boat broker in Dunedin please?.

     

    We've got a large, 50+ft, steel motor-sailer to place on the market in the next few weeks that's located in Dunedin and I'm looking for recommendations on a broker who can handle the sale locally and whom is competent marketing the boat nationally. 

     

    The boat could suit a commercial buyer as I believe she was built to survey but was never put into survey.

     

    If anyone has any experience or recommendations they could share it'd be much appreciated.

  9. Excellent news, the lobbying has paid off and we'll be rid of those pesky moored boats that were a H&S accident waiting to happen.

     

    Its now a clear run from the ASC launch ramp to the piles without playing dodgems.

  10. I had smaller (50mm high) ones made by a wood turner on a lathe. I supplied a lump of jarrah to the required thinkness and he machined them to the diameter i needed. 

     

    Perhaps laminate some hardwood to your desired height and do the same, then cut them in half.
