  1. I doubt Dalton will want his legacy to be the guy that took the cup away from New Zealand. He is at that stage of his career. My guess more negotiation to come. I did quite like the one off defence in the UK to pay the bills, then back here regardless of outcome.
  2. Not a fun day for the seven cargo boats anchored off Tauranga today. 4.5m beam sea with peaks of 6.5m...
  3. Tonga, Bequia and off Yemen
  4. Love a good anchor thread, choose your weapon.
  5. No we didn't but there are plenty to hit. More in BC where they harvest than in SE Alaska where it is more parks and wilderness. The ones floating on there side are populated by seagulls and much easier to see than the vertical "dead heads" We did hit a few lumps of ice as we got close to the tidewater glaciers but nothing serious.
  6. We swapped to a powerboat as the destination is more important to us than how we get there (diving and fishing the Barrier and Mokes mostly). If we were heading offshore again it would be on a sailboat for sure. I have thought of a daysailer just for the purity of the sailing experience, rather than the compromise of a cruising yacht. We chartered in the PNW three years ago and that is powerboat country for sure. We were there a month and only two days of that would have been enjoyable to sail.
  7. It was a joke Fish. If you boat long enough you will help people out for sure. The Tobago Cays one was interesting however as all the Kiwis and Ozzies yachties rushed to help, and, no one else. They just watched.
  8. Love the "freezing waters" comment. However I take offence at Fish's slight on the abilities of crew.org'ers to effect rescues. Here's my list and I bet there are plenty on here with more than this: Unmanned yachts drifting out to sea, 3x, Gt Barrier, Whitianga and Bodrum. Tow in of broken down power boats, 3x, Arid, Motiti and Coromandel Rescued swimmer in trouble with the tide, Tairua (I did that on a windsurfer) Rescued windsurfer with gear failure drifting out to sea, France, (she was gorgeous, no hardship at all) Rescued dinghy with one occupant heading
  9. This was track was on a jet boat doing about 6kn. Aiming East no problem, heading down to Spirits Bay and no progress at all.
  10. So is a forecast for light winds for LR. If it was forecast 18kn over the weekend would they be quite so keen?
  11. Go for a snorkel with the schools of 10lb plus snapper and shoals of trevally at the Poor Knights to see how reserves can work. We swam with a turtle there this Christmas for 15 minutes or so which was a first for me in New Zealand. 30 years ago we caught good crays at Waiheke, scallops in Oneroa and there were schools of kingfish at spray rock. It needs a rest for sure.
  12. I've done three trips on the west, three on the east coast. To me if it's a delivery then west coast every time. If you are cruising go east, get yourself to Napier, then relax and enjoy the rest.
  13. I remember the build up to SF and rich mans sport, not interested blah blah blah. Then when it happened interest went through the roof. I watched that one live, one day on the water the rest on Marina Green or thereabouts. Excellent atmosphere and better viewing from the shore. Bermuda was fantastic TV, perhaps the visual sporting event visually I have seen. For this one no idea if it will be worth watching on the water. They will have to keep the spectators a long way back for safety I guess. Will they just use one race course come cup time? If they swap with little notice it w
  14. Shared sh!tless because we are all following?
  15. More likely the Herald got the length of time wrong (no surprise) or they were anchored up for quite a while in a remote area of the Tuamotus before they set off to NZ.
  16. Because 38 miles a day seems quite slow for a 16m
  17. Two months and 18 days from Nuku Hiva? I doubt that.
  18. I was woken up this morning by Orcas having breakfast between the boat and the beach in Tryphena. They didn't attack the boat so we are all good for now.
  19. For the average punter "oh no, we are stuck on our yacht in Fiji" doesn't really invoke the shock and horror needed to get the ruling changed.
  20. Aleana I heard that the Riviera dealers say they could sell as many large models as they could get berths so perhaps it is a blessing?
  21. I guess that's one of the reasons trucks aren't allowed on the clip ons
  22. That's a good effort alright. I think there is a mooring in Deepwater Basin but there may be an out of work tourist boat tied up to it at the moment. Hopefully the fishing guys will help him out.
  23. Quite concerned for this guy. By Monday evening, some large waves were already hitting the southwest of the South Island, with the biggest waves expected by Wednesday evening. By then, the significant wave height at the southwest corner of the South Island is predicted to be above 8 metres high
  24. At Porquerolles off Hyeres there was a bloke in a boat selling rotisserie chooks and he was doing a fine trade
  25. Yep and Kingfish Lodge in Whangaroa did as well. Lots more opportunities though. I'm in Kaiarara Bay Fitzroy as I write this and the lodge there could do this easily. The lodge on Kaikoura Island used to offer meals but couldn't make a go of it. While we have a lot of boats we also have miles of coastline so perhaps not the density of punters to make it work. The small tides in the Med make it easier there plus the very settled weather in season. Also imagine trying to get a consent for a few moorings in front of your restaurant here...... As an aside we had a meal at a waterfront pla
