  1. Seems the fleet was in touch with each other. Did the boats that first noted a dramatic barometric drop pass it on?  Not that I'm saying it would have been different but I get the feeling from the pangolin link that some might have been slow to respond. Seems we also know more know about how the "bombs" develop.

  2. The future is clearly here for some people. The oar comparison was funny but unfair. Since I'm of the sailing variety of sailors and retired there's rarely a reason to rush somewhere under power. I'm looking forward to my next boat now. Any takers for this one? Special deal for crew forum members or their friends or their relatives or ... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1347514608

  3. i used 70mm red fire hose to make a fender for my dinghy ,  folded the ends and put a car valve in and inflated to about 3 psi , no leaks and a 5m long fender

How did you attach it to the gunnels? I used plastic hose from Bunnings and used SS screws into aluminium gunnels - has last more than a year so far.

  4. The last Professional Skipper had a good article about the traditional lighters of Norfolk Island. They use flax painters. If they get caught in the prop they get cut rather than bind and grind the engine to a standstill.

  5. Acid-base chemistry. Ethanol's hydroxyl group causes the molecule to be slightly basic. It is almost neutral like water. The pH of 100% ethanol is 7.33, compared to 7.00 for pure water.

  6. I had a wonderful interaction with YNZ last Sunday. How did they know I really love to mix it with big waves? They very kindly motored past in their launch probably going over 15 knots well inside 50 m in front of me as I was beating away from a lee shore at McKenzie Bay 1340 hours. I had a wonderful time bouncing up and down. BTW the tide rips around the Bay like crazy. I sailed off the anchor without help of the motor which was idling on standby. That was even more fun.
