  1. Looks like the Kimberly region in north Western Australia
  2. Looking at screwing some brass rubbing strips underneath the stub keels on a cat. It will be screws through glass into timber so I will drill oversize holes filled with epoxy glass mix and then screws into that to keep the timber sealed. Will stainless screws work or should I use brass to minimise corrosion of dissimilar metals.
  3. Burnsco is not all bad, they do have a few specials and it’s handy to be able to sail up to somewhere like half moon bay or gulf harbour when you are cruising if you really need 3 screws even if it costs you $5 . Lots of online options if you are not in a rush and want to shop around. I have recently been getting emails from someone called five oceans from the states which has some better prices.i think they are part of baron USA where I got a very good price on a raymarine tiller pilot.
  4. I am on piles in the Tamaki and have never had a problem. Seems there are quite a few boats there that have owners staying aboard and that gives some security to surrounding boats. I have arrived on my boat late at times and been challenged by neighbors once a police chopper and several patrol cars turned up when we arrived late on a new to us boat and were using a torch to get ready for bed as the lights were not working. Some boats have flashing lights that may or may not be alarmed. I feel pretty safe there Lots of housing looks over the boats too.
  5. Fizz boat if you want to get there fast and don’t mind paying for gas but if you want trailer able and roomy I like the young 780 trailer sailer. With a 10 hp 4 stroke you can motor all day at 6 knots if you don’t want to sail and they are light to tow being water ballast. Cheaper too.
  6. I got a Raymarine 2000 new from the states for around 500 nz total happy with it so far but would not go offshore without 2 of them and a wind vane possibly.
  7. There was a 100 ft glass yacht that was broken up with a digger in Taranaki and dumped. In the right place it would have made a great home for crayfish and an interesting dive spot. It was a new build so had no machinery or oils to cause contamination.
  8. I had a panel that had been underwater and the copper ribbon behind the connector had turned to green dust. I dug it out with a knife to get to intact ribbon and soldered 2 new wires on then sealed with silicone. Working fine. Seems they are pretty hard to kill.
  9. The farrier 41 is a good offshore sailing cat but normally over 300 k
  10. Yes pretty sure some fairly major trips have been done by JetSki including I think a circuit of nz. And with 3 travelling together they were a lot safer than one alone. Noisy and annoying and inefficient but often used as rescue craft in big surf so no less safe perhaps than your average single engine power boat.
  11. Yes I would imagine when you got the runs from eating too many pineapples in Lautoka that dehydration may have affected your facilities
  12. Saw a documented case of flares saving 2 lives last night actually. Went and saw the movie aquaman which I am pretty sure is a true story. Anyway aqua man and his girlfriend used flares to scare off the monsters from the trench and a vhf radio would not have had the same effect at all.
  13. Even from in the water I would think a vhf will have reasonable range with some of the repeaters at high points on land. A phone in a case could also be useful if in range.
  14. I made a simple cover of clear plastic stitched together underneath with cable ties. Gladwrap works too if you are wanting a quick fix temporarily.
  15. When they block it’s normally right. Down at the valve inside the skin fitting. Piece of wire carefully used from outside as a last resort usually works.
  16. I have Freeview works on my boat in Auckland has some sort of disc type antenna on the radar arch gets most channels but not tv one if in town. Came with the boat and not affected by direction but only works close to town.
  17. I wrapped a piece of clear plastic as used in dodger windows around mine so I can still see and use the controls. Used cable ties to stitch it together underneath the pilot
  18. Looked like some sort of AC team sailing off whangarei heads last week, couldn’t see the boat but sailing fast with mainsail only and at least 3 chase boats, anyone know more?
  19. Has anyone tried or any feedback on the above self polishing antifoul, resonable price about $420 for 10 l .? For a cat moored near whangarei heads, so pretty clean water.
  20. For lay flat hose check your local fire station and ask , old and damaged hose ends up binned occasionally, 41,45,70 and 90 mm sizes
  21. When I took a 26 ft hotpot trailer sailer into whanaki years ago we arrived at the bar at low tide with no swell we then walked the boat in once the water was knee deep as we only needed about 12 inches to float.used to have a gbe too and it would have been no problem to have taken it in that day as well.
  22. Still its nice to have a cruising home away from home that can operate on 2 batteries and a few solar panels and occasional use of a small engine that can maintained with a few simple tools.
