  1. Hi Marcus, I tried contacting you the other day. I'll try again.
  2. I've just been doing a bit of hunting around online and I was looking at the Separett toilets. It appears that they don't use any bulking agent but I did see 2-speed fans on their Villa models so that they could speed up the dehydrating process when dealing with frequent use periods. They don't churn either but it appears that they rotate the container each use to more evenly distribute the contents as you sit down and the waste is going straight into a compostable bag in a removable container. Pretty bulky toilets though.
  3. Pondering zero discharge toilet options such as the Electroscan waste treatment system and the Air Head and Nature's Head dehydrating toilets (you can't really call them composting) for a yacht. Incinerating toilets would be an option if they didn't need to draw so much power so for a yacht I have ruled them out. From what I understand the Electroscan has electrodes which need replacing at a cost but you don't need to personally remove waste as you do with the dehydrating toilets but how reliable are they and what is the maintenance routine? I'm drawn to the simplicity of the dehydrat
  4. Well, it seems that I have a few names for the short list so far, Bailey's Insurance Brokers, Lumley, Mariner Marine Insurance, and PIC Insurance and I may or may not need a survey. Anything else?
  5. I enjoy rowing so this is making me want to build a Nutshell now. Plans?
  6. Not yet, but working on it. Looking for something in the Tamaki River around Half Moon Bay/Little Bucks if I can.
  7. Put the receiving bottle on a set of scales to monitor it as it's filling and you shouldn't overfill.
  8. OK, the yacht purchase is getting closer so I need to look at some insurance. Recommendations of who to call and who not to call? Good and bad experiences welcome. What do I need to be aware of and what should the policy cover? At this stage, it's for coastal cruising around NZ and being on a mooring.
  9. I had the same thought as Steve but this makes sense.
  10. Thanks for the offer Farrari. Currently, I'm sitting in Melbourne but will be back in the next few weeks so trying to sort things out online where possible and getting the family to run around for me where necessary.
  11. I have looked at the Seafarer site as I've heard good things about them but the information about the different models is a little sparse. No capacities and no pricing plus there are a couple of different designations but no details about what they mean.
  12. I have considered it myself and may still build something down the track but it's a timing issue. I'd been thinking of adding a continuous closed cell foam fender around the outside for added stability and soft impact against boat hulls.
  13. Tempting but I'd probably need to deflate it to stow on the foredeck which would be for longer passages and rough weather like yourself. How wide is it and how far do the pontoons extend past the transom?
  14. Do you know the year or can you get the serial number?
  15. Curious as to why you think the raw alloy hull is not better than a painted one?
  16. How heavy is too heavy? I've also come across a Hypalon/fibreglass RIB which I think might be around 60kg which is getting up there in weight I think. I like the idea of Hypalon but not so sure on the fibreglass.
  17. That's ok, I originally posted a reply to you yesterday in the thread and then thought I'd PM you instead so I deleted the post. Length is my initial issue, I'm now thinking 2.8m might be my max to keep it workable so knowing if yours will fit would be a good start.
  18. I should add that the yacht will be on a mooring and I'm planning to spend a fair bit of time onboard cruising. I also like exploring and snorkelling/diving so needs to be a bit better than just for the occasional trip to the beach or another boat.
  19. I'm looking at getting an inflatable dinghy as a yacht tender but what should I consider? I figure the collective knowledge and experience here should be able to point me in the right direction. I'm looking for something that can carry at least three people but I can stow on the foredeck of a 9.5m yacht and be able to drag up the beach and launch single-handed so not crazy heavy or large. I'm tending to an alloy RIB but I'm open to suggestions given a good reason. I don't have an unlimited budget so second-hand is also an option. What should I avoid and what should I look for?
  20. Does anyone have any experience with building their own watermaker. I have come across a few DIY guides to build one but don't know if it is one of those things that is worth trying?
  21. Thanks, I'll check those out. I'm about to start reading Stress-free Sailing: Single and Short-handed Techniques. https://www.amazon.com/Stress-free-Sailing-Single-Short-handed-Techniques-ebook/dp/B00U01QTIQ/ref=pd_cp_351_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00U01QTIQ&pd_rd_r=XJ8Q57GBEQKFFF5RS0K5&pd_rd_w=LVrut&pd_rd_wg=zjG8R&psc=1&refRID=XJ8Q57GBEQKFFF5RS0K5
  22. What good books have you read on tips for singlehanded sailing? I have this Singlehanded Sailing: Thoughts, Tips, Techniques & Tactics pdf. What else would you recommend? SinglehandedTipsThirdEdition.pdf
  23. Try using the Wayback Machine. http://archive.org/web/
  24. Thanks for the suggestions. I have come across a Birdsall with a centreboard. Would love a multi but probably further down the track. Had kind of dismissed twin and bilge keels but I've realised it is a bias I picked up when I was young and really I should have another look as there is some sense to them too. Should add I'm looking at it more for cruising, including single or short handed so not race focused or too tender when it blows.
  25. I've been looking at Shoalcraft but wondering what other shallow draft yachts with a swing or retractable keel or a centreboard are around with a length in the 9m to 11m range?
