Richmond 2 Posted April 3, 2014 Share Posted April 3, 2014 Richmond Yacht Club is organising a beach cleanup in Islington Bay on April 5th (tomorrow!), and you should come along to help us clean up one of Auckland’s iconic bays! http://richmondyc.org.nz/beach-cleanup/ Lots of debris from the harbour washes up in Islington Bay (between Rangototo and Motutapu), so we are getting a bunch of people involved to clean it up. Where: Islington Bay When: April 5th, 2:00pm (following Destination Series Race 7) Fullers is generously providing a direct ferry service to Islington Bay for volunteers without boats (or less racing-inclined friends and family who want to come out for the day). Coming along will only cost you a regular Rangitoto ferry return ticket ($29 adult, $14.50 child). Go to http://tinyurl.com/issybaytickets to buy tickets! The ferry will leave town at 9:15 am and get to Islington Bay at 10:30 am. You can then spend the morning chilling out, going for walks, having lunch and generally enjoying the island. At 2:00pm, after the race, the ferry volunteers and yacht racers will all meet up on the beach for a briefing and to distribute bags, then we’ll get to it! If there are any keen divers out there, we can also collect debris from underwater in the bay! Bring your snorkeling or scuba gear if you’re interested. Afterwards we’ll have a BBQ (with Boerewors sausages donated by Fred’s Fine Foods!) and chill on the lovely clean beach. The ferry heads back at 4:30pm. The Watercare Harbour Clean-Up Trust will be helping us out by providing bags and taking away the rubbish we collect. Bring solid walking shoes, shorts (you might get wet!), and gloves- e.g. gardening gloves- plus whatever else you might need for the day (sunhat, sunscreen, water, lunch, etc).
