I've just been to the presentation in Tauranga, it was a very professional and interesting presentation. the development work by TNZ was amazing and the technical operating systems were explained in a broad sense plus some insights into the causes of mishaps were presented.

Well worth it, free by the way. The time length was at the limit for most but there was a lot of material to cover.

Time was running fast and they were over their time but the system with the electric actuator that helped adjust the foil was shown with a brief explanation.

It was presented as the breakthrough feature for Oracle to master the control of the beasts pitching problems, a further detailed explanation would have been great but too many people wanted to ask other questions. Can some one else get this elaborated upon at the following seminars.

Other factors were mentioned such as the wing rake and rudder mods too, but the electric actuator system looked to be the most devious or superior.

The nose dive by Oracle at the last start was overcome so easily is another point to explore, they described the forces involved in countering this incident and for this system to almost instantly adjust deserves a good story/explanation.

Was a very interesting talk, Neil showed how it worked with some simplified animations but probably didn't go into any more detail than in any of the other lectures.

An article released shortly after the cup showing how the electro-mechanical-hydraulic feedback loop worked can be found here:

I think this is the same designer's talks Clive.

If anyone missed them, this appeared on the RPNYC skippers and crew facebook feed this morning from Sandy Munro:

Well, the America's Cup shenanigans have kicked off again, deep breaths all round. Before that all gathers pace does anyone want to know more about what happened in the last one? What did happen to make Oracle improve so much, what were the differences between the boats and will we ever recover from the emotional stress? Well, can't help on that last one, but if you have an hour and a half free for an engineering presentation (from IPENZ) you may well learn a little more about the boats and the development work involved. Hope it inspires...
