Guest Posted November 26, 2014 Share Posted November 26, 2014 There is a new boat on the harbour, the multi story Hauraki Blue Cruises which is a little bigger than the Waiheke Ferries. When sailing and racing the Ferries skirt the yachts which makes life easier for everyone. Not Hauraki Blue. Last Wednesday they came through the middle of the race tooting their horn and insisting that yachts get out of their way. The question is, how big does a boat have to be before "Power gives way to sail" is negated given they are not a scheduled ferry service? Link to post Share on other sites

No scheduled ferry service has any rights over yachts in Auckland. From memory the only ferry large enough to be over 500 tonnes was the Supercat at 600 tonnes - even Quickcat is under this. Our vessel “is” restricted by the 500ton rule and on many occasions we are compelled to adhere to regulations and restrictions of our movements. How ever, we are also aware our ship is smaller and more manoeuvrable than most in our class and are aware of the need to accommodate non commercial vessel passage and presence. In short, it is our intention to keep clear of sailing craft as best as possible at all possible times, and will not demand right of way unless we are given no other option. Clive 13 Posted November 30, 2014 Share Posted November 30, 2014 On the subject of ferries .. it is interesting that Auckland Council place penalties on the ferries. 3 mins late for a scheduled stop and it has to be written up and penalties are imposed. Must be a similar contract to the busses. It doesn't exactly promote slowing down or avoidance if you are on a tight time schedule. Link to post Share on other sites
