One Ton Cup

Priscilla II

Recommended Posts

Fantastic dinner and film evening last night. Peter Montgomery introduced some newly restored footage of the 1969 cup in Germany, and 1971 in Auckland.  Many notable sailors in attendance including Bruce Farr, Chris Dickson, Tom Schnakenberg, John Lidgard.  Chris Bouzaid spoke about the restoration of Rainbow II, and there were three of the winning crew there. Sadly one more of his crew died 10 days ago after sailing on Rainbow.

There is talk of doing this regatta next year and turning it into a 'Ton' regatta, including half tonners, quarter tonners, and encompassing a wider range of boats.

Or not. How are they handicapping the OTC? The whole point was that they raced for line on the same hcp, that's why it took off. But they changed the rules and the hcp limits so often that there would be a huge range of boats that would not be able to race on a level rating. Consider a Cav 32 racing Gunboat Rangiriri.

Anyone know how they are getting around it this time?

Yes we are racing under the IRC handicap system.

The ton rules kept changing, through RORC and IOR, so there are multiple one ton rules.  A 1960s one tonner cannot be compared to a 1970s or 1980s boat.

Plus boats have been modified since then.

Hi Elly are you crewing on one of the boats? If so which one and how seriously are u guys approachin the regatta.

It seems a shame that in the past the powers that be messed with the handicapping and I cannot help but think that this puts people off. I know we all get advantaged and disadvantaged from time to time by handicapping and there is a lot of reasons why handicappers change stuff but ...

Hi Romany, yes I am on Revolution. We are just there to have some fun, and mix it up with the legendary boats and sailors. It's not often that you get to sail against the first sailor to be awarded NZ sportsman of the year. Most of the other boats have rockstars on board.

IRC is the best handicapping system we have, so lets hope it rewards the best sailed boats.

For the first four races we had light to moderate breezes, and sometimes down to zero. But for the last race we had a better breeze 12-15 for most of the race but getting over 25 knots in the Rangitoto channel. This caused problems for some boats with Rainbow rolling and breaking their spinnaker pole. Result chinese gybed and nearly losing a crew overboard. They got him back on board but lost his shoes. Pacific Sundance pole came off the mast, and later the downhaul popped. Wai Aniwa missed the last mark and had to go back, losing valuable time and series points.

So good to finish the series with a bit of breeze and excitement!
