ANZAC 200

Recommended Posts

Big day today on the Motorboat.....

Our plan to do the final bit of pimping, stowing and organising on the boat in preparation for the ANZAC 200 on Thursday turned to disarray. While Damon was up the rig fitting an additional masthead halyard and doing a rig check he noticed a couple of issues. The stay attachments for the masthead jumper were pulling through the rig. After a quick discussion we decided the only real option was to pull the rig out and fix it. All sorted now and the boat was rigged, back on the marina by 4pm and fully loaded and stowed by 8pm. A big day...

We spent about 6 hours sailing,anchoring, drifting, changing sails.

And were at north head.

Decided by the to me the big (for us) easterly came in we would be knackered. So pulled the pin. Pretty gutted, but just listened to nowcast and think we made the right call.

From BooBoo;

ANZAC 200

A fleet of 27 boats set off at 5:30pm on Thursday to compete in the first addition of the SSANZ(shorthanded sailing association of NZ) ANZAC weekend shorthanded races. The race takes the fleet up around the Poor Knights for the big boats, Sail rock for the smaller boats, with both divisions rounding the Mokohinau islands before finishing at Nagles Cove on Great barrier island. Weather has cooperated giving the boats a light beat off the start line and a 15-20kt SE for a nice spinnaker ride North. Very little moonlight and a strong incoming tide will make the first half of the race a real challenge.

The fleet is very diverse in both size and speed,  boats as large and powerful as the Elliott 50 Canting keeler ‘Ran Tan II’ which new owner Brian Petersen has recently brought back into the Auckland racing scene. The cookson 50 ‘Akatea’ and Class 40 ‘Hupane’ will no doubt be in hot pursuit.  Also gunning for line honours are the 2 smaller high performance monhulls Wayne Woods Elliott 35 Canting keeler ‘Bushido’ and the Debut shorthanded event for AJ Reid’s brand new YD37 ‘ANARCHY’. Division 1 is not all high tech modern race boats with seasoned campaigners on the Farr 38 Coppelia, 2 young 11s, and a mix of well setup 40-50ft racers and cruisers.

 At the smaller end of the scale in B division there will be an intense battle for line honours between the sports style boats and the more traditional heavier displacement yachts, the first half perhaps suiting the lighter boats and the last half suiting the bigger heavier boats.

Will it be a sports boat or a displacement boat who takes the gun and can the little Giant Slaying SR26 ‘MOTORBOAT’ follow on from there SSANZ Triple series line honours win.

There is a new initiative prize of a demountable Alloy Excel Anchor from the events sponsors Chains Ropes and Anchors for the first boat on handicap under 10.2m and built last century. This seems to have encouraged a good fleet of eligible boats to enter the race and there is a healthy fleet of mid sized boats competing for this prize.

Not all the boats are Auckland based, 2 boats from Tauranga have come up for the event and the Class 950 Crewless has a wellington crew member.

Port Fitzroy Boat Club has kindly put on a buffet dinner for the crews and with a generous amount of money from SSANZ behind the bar for a ‘Happy hour or 3’ its sure looks to be a good night at the club.

It was a hard race for all and chucked many challenges at the crews. Very slow start with most boats under anchor for an hour or so at Stanley point in a strong incoming tide. By about 10pm a light SE breeze had filled in and the fleet got underway again. The breeze quickly built 15 gusting 25 and the fleet had a fast beam reach to Kawau. Plenty of squalls with gusts as high as 30kts left some Carnage with a few Boats pulling out and motorboat breaking the prod before Kawau. The div 2 boats had a deeper angle down to sail rock with reports of some good speeds. The beat from the poor knights and sail rock to the mokohinaus was lumpy and unpleasant for all followed by a lay to the finish. Division 1 was taken out by outrageous fortune who stormed up the beat. Second was coppelia and 3rd Akatea who also won line honors finishing just after midday. Bernice took a convincing double line and handicap win in division 2 with MOTORBOAT coming second and Unitec 2 third. MOTORBOAT also took the special prize of the excel racing anchor supplied by chains ropes and anchors for the first boat under 10.3m and built last century. Many weary crews this morning after raft ups and party's late into the night. Prize giving tonight at the port Fitzroy boat club.
