Uphill Battle for PIC Coastal Classic Competitors

A stiff nor-west breeze forecast to last for the duration of tomorrow's PIC Coastal Classic will make it an uphill slog for competitors in New Zealand's most iconic yacht race.

The official race forecast, issued at tonight's race briefing by weather forecasting and routing experts PredictWind, is for a continued north-westerly breeze throughout Friday, until the currently stalled front passes over the North Island around midday Saturday.

Winds will most likely be around 15 knots for the 9.30am start in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, which for the first time in history will be streamed live at www.coastalclassic.co.nz.

As the fleet heads north towards Cape Brett, those who stay inshore will most likely experience lighter and more westerly winds, while those who head further offshore will find stronger but more northerly breezes.

An on-the-wind race means almost no chance of a new record being set, but it does give the boats that excel at upwind sailing the first opportunity in a few years to show their stuff.

According to PredictWind.com, current race record holder Team Vodafone Sailing is expected to finish in between seven and 7.5 hours. Team Vodafone has finished in less than six hours for the last three years, and last year set the current race record of five hours and 13 minutes.

Volvo 70 Giacomo, which is potentially the fastest monohull in the race, is predicted to reach the finish line in Russell in around 10 - 12 hours. While a mid-sized cruiser-racer like a Young 88 should finish in just over 18 hours.

Even an AC72, if one was entered, would finish the race outside of record time, according to PredictWind.com.

At the race briefing, race spokesperson Anthony McBride encouraged competitors to: "Sail responsibly but not conservatively, stay safe, and have fun."

The spectacular mass start for the PIC Coastal Classic is off Devonport Wharf at 9.30am on Friday 23 October.

The boats race in eight race divisions categorised by size and speed, with a chance to win over $20,000 in prizes.

The PIC Coastal Classic is organised by the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club. Live streaming coverage of the start, boat tracking, commentary, sked times, photos and video will be available from race start on www.coastalclassic.co.nz.

The start for the coastal has always been in divisions. The only difference was the first start of the big mono's and multi's went first at 10am.

Great coverage of the start with the live streaming.

Nothing on TV1 midday news there usually is but Martin Tasker is at the Rugby World Cup.

All the leading boats look like they have been knocked at the Northern end of Kawau wind gone more northerly.

Vodafone has made a number of tacks now on starboard just south of Mangawai

Tracker not as good as previously or the European trackers.race data is so confusing.Does not give sea conditions, cannot tell the speed wind direction relates to wind or vesselDisappointing and is rubbish. At present leading boat is 78th position on handicap. I assume which I should not but the DIV has only 5 vessels but handicap placing 78th but does state which handicap system when reading the results.News reports do not mention, who is, each division leading on handicap.Mixed yacht racing is all about placing's on handicaps.Hard to compare design against design each class.Rubbish race.OC

Are you ever happy about anything?

Rehabilitated if you don't like the Tracker or Race why are you bothering looking at it.

I think the tracker is great we all know it's blowing NW and probably up to 20 knots by now and will bend round to a Northerly.

You can work out the boats that are doing well on handicap in each division.

It's not going to give an accurate result as not all the boats trackers are working.

They are only on board cell phones.

If you really want handicap results why don't you work them out for us & post them on here for us at each call in point.

The organisers of the race are all volunteers give them a break and most of them are probably racing.

To the NZMYC thanks for the great coverage
