SSANZ ANZAC 250

A huge fleet of 45 yachts have entered for the SSANZ Chains Ropes and Anchors ANZAC 250 two-handed yacht race.  The longhaul (250nm) and shorthaul (180nm) divisions started Thursday 21st April at 1730 while the small boat and cruising divisions start at 0900 Friday 22nd April and do a more leisurely 60nm course to Great Barrier Island via Flat Rock.

The long haul and short haul course takes the fleet around Channel Island, Cuvier Island and outside Great Barrier Island before heading back inside Little Barrier island and Sail Rock. From there the fleet splits and the short haul division heads back to the finish at Port Abercrombie while the Long Haul boats go up around the Poor Knights before heading to the finish. Then the boats will raft up in Smokehouse Bay at Great Barrier with the prize giving and some ‘shore based’ activities on Saturday night.

 

The forecast is for light Easterlies swinging slowly to the North with a very light swell and a full moon. Champagne yachting, doesn’t get much better!

The short haul fleet ranges in size from the smallest boats E770 Real Deal and SR26 Rattle N Rum through to the Titan 36 Zen and the Hanse 400 Goldenpond at the bigger end of the fleet and the only multihull in the race- the 8.5 catamaran ‘Voom’. Cruising division could almost be renamed the Farr division with 9 Farr boats including 7 1020s. Sharing the same start and course is the small boat fleet with the only Mini Transat 650 in NZ ‘B&G Racing’ and the short handed veterans on the Ross 830s Cool Change and Revolution Blues.

Glamour out here. Almost at Arid island on the outside of barrier. Max just to leward, notorious and provincial cowboy about 3 nm behind and gale force about 6nm back. Gennaker reaching in 10-12kts. Champaign sailing.

Cool change isn't an 830.

 

And it almost reads like there are only 3 boats in the small boat, there are 6.

I just appreciate that someone is doing updates and comms.

Fantastic fun as always. Tricky at times and a reminder to keep with it until finished. Very light and fickle between LB and GB so plenty of passing lanes. The big surprise was the greeting from Jon with his bucket of goodies and a voucher for $100 for first on line. Then again at prize giving for another $500 for the handicap win! What amazing support from Chains Ropes and Anchors for short handed sailing.

SSANZ ANZAC 250 – Young 88 Heartlight’s Story – By Nigel Garland

Heartlight has just completed the SSANZ, Chains, Ropes and Anchors, ANZAC 250 Shorthhaul (180nm) and would recommend all 88’s do it next year.  www.ssanz.co.nz

We left Thursday evening in a very light Nor’ Easter that built to 10-12knots as we tacked through the Motuihe Channel. Plenty of bigger boats still around which was encouraging though a long night ahead as we as we headed out to Channel Island in a short chop and about 15 knots. Hoping we’d have a lay through to Cuvier Island went out the window with an Easterly shift through the Colville Channel and an incoming tide but rewarded with a fantastic morning.

A short kite ride down to Great Barrier but the breeze went forward to the NE and continued to lighten so back to the No1 for a tight reach down its east coast and then finely went very light with kite up and down as we squeezed past the Needles at its northern end.

The breeze died out for a short time as we approached Little Barrier. We chose to take a wide rounding to the south which worked out well and gybed back using the kite like a code zero and fortunately held a light breeze the whole way around. It then built back to about 10 knots with the help of some rain clouds providing a great on the wind leg up to Sail Rock. Drifted around Sail Rock about 4am and managed to sneak out of the wind shadow behind the Hen and Chicks.

Finally a nice light breeze to get us back to Port Abercrombie and the finish at about 10.30am Saturday.

A great prize giving party at Smokehouse Bay with the cruising and small boats (60nm) kicking off at 3pm. Unfortunately, didn’t catch up with the Y88 Kristina who also came in second. A lot of these guys headed home that evening to beat a SW change. We slipped out at about 4am after a few hours’ sleep though the music was still blasting. Home by lunchtime.

As always a good event by SSANZ, we were dead donkey last for a while after the start in the very light breeze getting out of the Harbour, Berenice struggles a bit in the very light, managed to pass a few on the way to Cuvier rounding in close company with the Gaurantee, Spearhead and Activator.

Had a great run down the back of Barrier but started to go light on the way to little barrier. While drifting along at about 3 knots we heard a bang and stopped dead, after a bit of a panic we realized there were no rocks around, the helm was jammed but I managed to give it a wiggle and a massive mostly submerged log floated out the back, just below the surface.

After an undie change and check of the bilge we managed to wriggle out from little barrier going upwind with our code 1 kite. The breeze filled in all the way to Ngunguru when a little squall came through, lovely we thought a nice 20 knots to get us around the Poor Knights so we chopped down to the 3 head sail and the old girl was trucking. This only lasted about 20 minutes when the breeze started to falter, changed back to the big head sail but it then went real light and we were soon drifting along at 2 knots off the Sugarloaf Rocks. That was the end for us we spent the next 7 hours drifting around the Poor Knights, Still with The Guarantee and Spearhead close by.

Around midday we decided it was pretty unlikely to meet the time limit so settled in for a 9 hour motor back to Smokehouse Bay.

Was a bit disappointed to find the onshore activities were all over by the time we got there, oh well a good excuse to catch up on some much needed rest before the Sail back to Tauranga.

There really was some seriously funny stuff that happened, and many stories that will not be mentioned again other than to those who were there... I still have some huge blanks from the night but I was told I had a good night and didn't make too much of an ass out of myself.

 

It was a new level of obnoxious.

Yes it was a messy scene that greeted us, it wasn't even 9 o'clock. I wont mention any names to protect the guilty.

 

Saw an awesome display of feeding the fishes the next morning.

And to think we weren't planing on running this event next year what with it being the RNI,

But there will be linchings I'm picking if it doesn't happen.

Shorter format though, probably range from 120nm down to 50nm courses which should make for a more united gathering

Hopefully no one loses there shorts next time
