waikiore 399
Intrigued to finally see this art installation erected on the wharf even without the promised giant chandelier, its a shame one side of the council doesnt talk to the other-- laneway, the fishing boat celebration, the open wharves and regatta day on anniversary weekend, but they will do the official unveiling a week or two later..... MasterOfDisaster 0
There was some good schadenfreude to be had listening to public feedback about it on RNZ yesterday morning. You know art is doing it's job when it's got people upset arms about its very existence. It seems more tasteful than Cuba Street's gold-plated poop.
Fish 0
Apparently Barfoot and Thompson donated $1mil to initiate this 'art'. How much irony is in that? A real estate company donating the average price of a house in Auckland, to build a house, but one that no-one can actually live in, in the middle of a housing crisis. the irony! Is that art imitating life of life imitating art... oh dear. It doesn't even look like art, it looks like a house. Comment has been made on the number of homeless people sleeping rough in the general downtown area around this house......
rmiker 15
Oh it's supposed to be art. So we were wrong, someone hasn't started importing second hand houses. Don't bet on it!!
Fish 0
I had a lisdecksic moment readying this thread title just then. I thought it said 'Steak House on the Wharf'. Now that would be good wouldn't it. You could tuck into a nice juicy ribeye while watching the boats sail by. Much more useful than a monument that looks just like a house... Bugger this, I'm going to go home and put dinner on the BBQ.
erice 732
got a nice glass balustrade on the outside stairs can't remember those on 50's state houses the copper guttering too, but that will age into something that looks right meh.... at least tax payers didn't have to pay for it

erice 732
The sculpture has largely been funded by a $1 million gift in 2013 from the real estate firm Barfoot & Thompson to mark 90 years in business. The cost blew out to $1.924 million before being trimmed to $1.5 million. The $500,000 shortfall has been filled by private donations. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11678132

brendong 5
In the midst of Auckland's housing crisis our council sign off a $1.5 million state house edifice that can only be viewed from the outside, imagine how many current (liveable) state houses the council can have tarted up for $1.5 million. I'm not a graffiti supporter or fan however I hope this load of crap becomes a target for some real smart political graffiti aimed at our council.

smithy09 50
About as useful as the Milford marina bridge!! Not quite as expensive though...
erice 732
if "streeties" occupied it think they'd be kicked out REAL quick possibly the same if they slept + pissed in the doorway of the art gallery but setting up "digs" at library seems tolerated maybe 6 - 10? bods sleeping there each night at the bike racks or various cardboard structures tastefully blended in to the sidewall window alcoves meanwhile, benefit mum who accepted $5k to move from ak to a hamilton state house has used up the money and wants to move back to a caravan in ak
