Auckland might not host the Cup

Recommended Posts

Unless the Port of Tauranga are thinking of using public support for the cup to advance their long held desire to extend the Sulphur Point side of the port out into the middle of the harbour, where would they put the bases?

They would have to move some logs but loads of room. There is also the area near Hutchinson's boat yard which has been earmarked as a marine precinct which would be ideal. Deep water and easy access to the public.

From the TYPBC newsletter.

a bit of a surprise to get a call from Dick Meacham of Emirates Team New Zealand on Monday saying that he, Kevin Shoebridge and Ray Davies wanted to come down and have a look at Tauranga with a view to considering it as a possibility to host the Americas Cup Challenger series and the Americas Cup between January and March of 2021. This was to be a top secret visit but by the time they got here yesterday they had changed their minds about that and were happy for us to publicise it. Hence I can talk about it here.

It seems that preparations and even plans for preparations are going very slowly in Auckland and they are getting concerned. They have to announce the venue by August of next year and they believe that works would have to be underway by June. They are concerned that that deadline might not be achievable and so they are considering other options. If all else fails the event would be held in Italy and we all understand that would be a tragic loss for NZ.

Can Tauranga do it? It would require a big involvement from Port of Tauranga to accommodate the 3 hectares for the 8 or so teams plus a village somewhere, plus facilities to host a lot of superyachts.

To me, the thought of achieving this is mind boggling, but you could tell that these guys were used to getting things done and were not put-off by these logistical challenges. Their next stop after seeing the harbour and race area (outside the harbour off Mount and Papamoa beaches) was a meeting with Port of Tauranga. They said at that stage that ‘Tauranga was still a legitimate option’.

So who knows what will happen from here. If nothing else our contribution will probably have ruffled a few feathers in Auckland at least, and may get things moving up there.

Be careful is all I'd say to the TYPBC and remember what can happen to a host when parasites come to visit. Other than that give it hell, if Auckland isn't getting on with it then it must go somewhere else and better Tauranga than Italy.

Looking around Auckland these days you'd have to say development is really causing a bit of chaos, I do wonder if the super shitty could cope with another set of road works in the middle of it.

supposedly we will hear where council are planning the bases today

but so far it seems there is still no consensus or money

so no viable plan

goff would have been crying + blaming wellington for his inability to run his city if the nats were in power

but now it's his mates

who will he blame?

won't be himself and his dysfunctional council

It does seem an argument worth exploring whether to use what space we have (and have the camps in 3 different locations) rather than shell out $80-$100M to build a wharf that sticks out further into the harbour though doesn't it?
