Rats 28
Anyone do analysis of engine oil samples in Auckland?. Often used to get a understanding of engines general condition or dependent upon what sort of metal detritus is found in the oil an indication of potential problems forthcoming. wheels 543
If it is a big engine, thus super expensive to do up, or you are trying to diagnose an internal problem, it is worth it. But to be honest, it's a waste of time for any other purpose. I mean, so what are you going to do if the test shows some metal? Best is to do regular oil changes. The cleaner and fresher you keep the oil, the better. In fact, changing Oil often using a cheap oil is actually better than changing it at normal intervals and using expensive oils. However, as many are a pain in the A to change, it is better for most of us to use a good oil and change at a longer interval
Ed 143
Also one sample won't tell you much. We have regular sampling regiemes on gearboxes and hydraulics, and we are looking for trends as opposed to specific trigger levels. Some gear boxes make metal, but do so consistently, and without obvious wear patterns and are stubbornly reliable. We do tend to carry a spare for those if they are mission critical though... bigal.nz 59
A mate did it using Gough's. As has been pointed out you need a baseline then regular submissions after that. Might give you piece of mind if you were doing a offshore passage.
