Black Panther 1,581
Is there a rule of thumb for what size for different sized boats?
Priscilla II 392
BP, here is a Wallas listed on trademe. Wallas are great heaters and this could well be a good buy. https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1534107769
w44vi 17
I would have thought 4kw would be bit small ?
Fish 0
4 kW in a boat sounds fairly big to me. But I would have thought the big variables would be where the boat is going to be (climate) and how well insulated it is. Big difference between Auckland in the winter, Fiordland, the Sub Antartic islands or Patagonia. Boats have much smaller air volume than houses to heat, but have a substantially different environment obviously with moisture, ventilation etc. I'm not aware of any rules of thumb though. I would think there are too many variables with location, climate and type of boat.
Island Time 1,220
I have a 2kw in Island Time. She is well insulated, but in temps under 5 deg, the heater is barely adequate. Go for a 4kw at least!
Black Panther 1,581
Thanks for that link, looking seriously
Priscilla II 392
BP check that the unit is complete including the exterior exhaust fitting. Installation is pretty straight forward. Wallis also do a nifty cooker come heater, not cheap though. Ducting, vent grills and other bits and pieces if required can be purchased easily.

Black Panther 1,581
i was wondering if I could tee the exhaust into an existing above water thru hull? Or does it get really hot?
Black Panther 1,581
And I would need minimum two vents
Island Time 1,220
The exhaust gets pretty hot.
southernman 73
We have 4kw in a 43footer ducted and it's toasty warm, BP you'd need a big heater for your boat.
ex TL systems 63
We have 4kw in a 43footer ducted and it's toasty warm, BP you'd need a big heater for your boat. unless you can shut a few doors so you don,t need to heat the whole boat
darkside 61
Yes targeted areas is good. Get the duct outlets with louvre ends you can close off heat to areas not being used. I have one ducting pipe that runs under the floor of the shower and loo that makes the floor nice and warm first thing.
Black Panther 1,581
My boat is not much bigger than most 45 fters. It is just distributed differently.
Bad Kitty 252
Or you can get an Eberspacher that heats glycol rather than just air, & circulates it thru little heater matrixes. Put a few of those where you want. You can even run it thru some pipe in the head & have a heated towel rail. On Bad Kitty it runs thru the hot water cylinder also, heats the water. Black Panther 1,581
The one on trade me is looking interesting. If I could have two vents and could open and close them. Warm the main cabin most of the time and the aft cabin at bedtime.
Myjane 40
I have a gas cabin heater old but never used if some one is after one
