DrWatson 374
What allowances and plans have they made for transport for all those people? (everyone still wants a place to park their car, unfortunately.)
Priscilla II 392
Talking of architects sadly David Mitchell passed away recently. David was one of the greats and has left a fine legacy that many fail to do. I am not sold on the relocation of the Port in totality. The facility has just exploded in size and capacity in a very poorly planned fashion and uplifting and shifting leaves the public purse exposed to private sector avarice full of fish hooks. POAL rate of return is laughable but a retained scaled back compact smart port seeking to be more integrated and compatible with the local environment would be a better choice in my view. Tim C 23
Why have we got so first World that we've forgotten that Wharves are for a city and a country to TRADE over!! We have a huge number of lovely beaches and foreshore in Auckland, yet somehow the business area of trading good is seen as somewhere to have lattes and watch games! It seems ridiculous to even think of reducing any of its capacity to me...

Simon 6
well, no, it needs to be increased, and almost everyone agrees. and most agree that the increase can't happen at the current location. Amen to that. Approx 6% of Auckland Port's freight leaves by rail; the rest on trucks into the most congested stretch of roading in New Zealand. Auckland will have another 1 million people in the next 20 years. Its just not sustainable to have a an operational freight port in the middle of the city, particularly as its capacity will need to grow over time. Many other countries have realised this and ports have moved accordingly - it is not unusual for 19th century solutions to be needed to addressed in the 21st century. In reality its not a question of whether the Auckland Port moves, the question is how it occurs and where the various bits end up. The longer we delay, the more expensive it will be for tax and ratepayers and the longer we miss the opportunity cost of having a downtown waterfront that adds genuine value to the city Auckland is becoming.
ScottiE 174
maybe it would be cheaper to just shut down the CBD and move that to Whangarei . . . or the Mount . . . or Kawakawa!
