Purchasing a liferaft for Tasman delivery trip and then selling it?

If Branson is your pin-up boy, I rest my case. A man like him paying for women's company is pitiable. Is he in jail yet for his anti-consumer actions in UK rail and insider trading in NZ? He got access to confidential information that NZ online casinos would be legalized, and then used it to make millions. Just the sort of person we can all emulate.

I think life will get a bit too complicated if we try and apply a moral judgement to such minor aspects as the discussion of life rafts and life jackets. I'm all for calling out latent sexism, but personally I think referring to a lifejacket as a well known supermodel is an order of magnitude different to rooting interns on the companies board room table.

 

I thought KMM's analogy that his life jacket was as comfortable as a warm Chalize Theron was a good analogy of a comfortable life jacket, it made me think of this rich and famous person who was doing just that...

I must say it didn't occur to me that mentioning Richard Branson would cause such moral outrage. I do apoligise for any offense caused, regardless that it was un-intentional.

I shall endeavor to avoid mentioning any prominent person in the future, in case something in that prominent person's past has offended the sensibilities of the board.

I have done a decent amount of international travel with my lifejacket and had no issues. Sometimes I took the cartridges out and left them on top of the jacket in a plastic baggie (looking at you, American TSA), other times I left them "plugged in." Once I left my knife attached to the jacket (grateful I didn't end up in Malaysian jail for that one...)

 

This is all to say, YMMV, especially considering this is my experience with a jacket, not a raft.

 

You can always ring the airlines or airport and ask what their requirements are for liferafts. I'm not surprised they're strict, but you'd think they could relax a bit considering it's safety gear very similar to what a plane will already have on board.

 

 

Sidenote: I would willingly throw myself overboard if it meant cuddles from either Branson or Theron...

Back to life rafts...so, I guess if a life raft could go KABOOM inside a plane, then it could go KABOOM inside your boat too.

So, do I now need two life rafts? A life raft to save me if the other life raft goes KABOOM and blows a hole in my boat?

Could be done with bps boat being timber. If you can fit in enough positive flotation to overcome the negative and keep it balanced so the boat will stay level. If you know how many sheets of ply were used in construction and the weight of ballast plus motor mast etc you could estimate how many cubic meters of air or polystyrene etc you would need. Or just start again with a multi Hull.

Pogo's are designed with foam in all the voids, like under bank spaces, so they are unsinkable.

I'm sure there are a few other production boats that do that, it's not a new concept.

 

But would you still need a raft if you had a certified unsinkable boat?

 

Pogo's still carry rafts.

Fear of fire I guess...

Watertight bulk heads also help keep boats afloat. Not so common on average sized yachts.

 

These would all reduce the need of going to a raft, improve the odds of staying on the boat etc.

I'd think you still want to carry a raft or suitably designed survival dinghy anyway.

My wharram cat has 2 full bulkheads in each Hull which may assist in isolating any leaks. The disadvantage is having 2 isolated smaller cabins instead of one larger space. All about compromise but the perfect boat could be the one you already have until the next one arrives. A fire you can’t control will mean having to abandon ship in a hurry so some sort of raft or alternative will still be needed.
