Isuzu 38 Hp, PRM Gearbox, Instruments

Recommended Posts

Reliable, low revving, high torque marine diesel - Isuzu 3AB1.
38 Hp @ 2,800 rpm,
105 nm torque at 2,000 rpm - bore x stroke 86 x 102 mm

Gearbox - PRM 160 - 1.96:1 hydraulic - very solid

Instruments - rev counter, key start, temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, volts, 2 x fault lights, engine stop (compass not included)

Original manuals included

New engine mounts - "Cushy floats" - very good
New drive damper plate (R&D)
85 Amp Alternator, approx 10 yrs old, compatible with smart charger (smart charger not included)
Refurbished raw water pump (Lees)
Refurbished heat exchanger (and periodically cleaned with "Barnacle Buster") ('new' items from Nov 2015)

This engine / boat has been in our family for 20 yrs, only reliability issues has been due to dirty diesel, this is a reliable slow revving engine. Has been fastidiously maintained.

Yacht was launched 1985 so this engine is 33 years old. No hour meter, so running hours are not known, however it has only been used as a sailing yacht 'auxiliary' so light annual hours. We have a good sail wardrobe and like to sail places, hence this engine has not been flogged.

In full running order, available for viewing / listening / test run in our yacht, located Whangaparaoa. Plan to pull engine out in August

Shallow sump

All dimensions available - please contact seller

Note: for those out of town, we can arrange packaging of the engine in a proper wooden shipping crate and delivery to a freight company (Northshore or northern Auckland depots only) for shipping. Shipping at purchasers cost and arrangement. Drop off point will need a forklift or similar for removing engine / shipping crate from a domestic trailer. The shipping create will be the same one our new engine is coming in, so is purpose designed and suitable for the job. Costs should be a standard pallet rate from any general freight firm.

Fish thats a good looking donk, (gold plated too :) ) What are you replacing it with that would be an improvement?

Thanks Native,

Its not so much about replacing it with anything better, its more about an opportunity we've taken.

The short story is we've got a new engine, complete with hydraulic PRM gearbox (same spec as our current one), fully spec'ed control panel (with temp and oil pressure gauges) and a full supplier warranty for substantially less than retail, basically at trade.

This engine (the Isuzu) is a good runner, and we've put the effort and dollars in to keeping it in top condition, we gave a lot of thought to keeping the Isuzu and not taking the opportunity in the new engine, but right now we can install it ourselves and have the boat going again before Labour weekend, so it makes sense to do that (father is retired so has the time and technical ability to do the install).

Combined with the big discount on the new engine, I'm looking to the future as well. I've got two young kids and am planning on 10 to 15 years of family cruising coming up, so am looking at the capital jobs on the boat that need doing, the engine and drive-train is about the last one left. We like to keep the boat in good condition and plan replacements / upgrades rather than let things fall apart. We've already replaced the teak decks, painted the topsides and cabin top, re-sealed the windows, replaced the hatches, replaced all of standing and running rigging, upgraded electronics, autopilot (nice hydraulic one with solids state 3 axis compass), batteries and charging capability, copper coat on the hull etc, oh, and some 'soft furnishings' on the inside (missus was in charge of that stuff...)

So yes, I do believe this Isuzu is a good engine and is worth someone installing in their boat if they happen to need a new engine (i.e. their current one has died) but can't or don't want to pay for a brand new modern one at the price those are going at (which, to be honest, is traumatising - you can get a free ute if buying a diesel engine from a car dealer for about half what you pay for a new engine for use in a boat, but you don't get the aircon, stereo, bluetooth hands-free phone and a couple of dozen airbags... crazy)

Listing updated,

Now have the option to ship the engine for anyone out of town that may be interested, as a pallet on general freight. Will use the wooden shipping create our new engine is coming in, so it is purpose designed and suitable for the job.
