A Dutch team led by Simeon Tienpont wants to participate in the upcoming America's Cup in 2021. The KNZ & RV from Muiden and KR & ZV 'De Maas' from Rotterdam have reported to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as challenger for the 36th America's Cup. Tienpont, the former skipper of Team AkzoNobel and America's Cup winner, seems the ideal foreman. ...

Unless I mis-read the article the first time (and I'm pretty certain I didn't), the piece about the Monaco announcement has been altered. Now reads...

Sail-World NZ has signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement with an as yet unannounced Challenger (not the Tienpont-led team) a formal announcement was expected in Monaco on November 29, 2018, local time, however the team has advised that they will not be present in Monaco, but had filed their Challenge with Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. They expect to make a statement announcing the Challenge in January 2019.

All Notices of Challenge, are subject to vetting by the Defender, RNZYS, to ensure that they are in compliance with the Deed of Gift, the 19th century document which governs the conduct of the America's Cup generally, and also with the Protocol which covers the specifics of the 36th Match. Part of that Protocol sets out five criteria additional to the requirements of the Deed of Gift designed to eliminate an entity that is not a bona fide yacht club.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand can confirm there have been an additional 8 Notices of Challenge received by the 5pm (NZT) deadline.

According to the supporting entry documents, only one of these entries is capable of immediate acceptance while the remaining seven notices of challenge carry conditions. Some of the entries are likely to be invalid, something which will be determined through a vetting process which will begin immediately.

Interesting speculation about who the new 8 may be, including a possible Chinese team led by Craig Monk. https://www.yachtracing.life/eight-new-americas-cup-challenges-lodged/

I imagine a Chinese team might have significant funding directly or indirectly from the Chinese government, who I'm guessing would be pretty highly motivated to capture a trophy called the "America's Cup."

Team France won't be coming (though they weren't one of the 8 in the speculation above)... https://www.adonnante.com/46134-36e-americas-cup-ac72-team-france-renonce-a-la-36eme-americas-cup/

Despite the support of many institutional and major players in the high-tech industry, whom we sincerely thank for their help and trust, the project did not raise all the funding in the time allotted.

I can't see a date on this, but I'm assuming it's new.
