Sailors Corner closing down

Recommended Posts

Yeap but not too sure about 'good'. One chandlery and 3 or 4 smaller units for not messy not noisy 'marine' related businesses like brokers, maybe a sparky, that sort of thing. Plus more cafes, maybe a restaurant. In front will be 70ft Rivieras as all the western side gets turn into sales berths. All will share a very tiny number of carparks, about the same as just Sailors Corner currently has, and as the building will take out a few 100 plus the big changes to make it pedestrian focused of the southern side of Westhaven the already sh*t parking will be come like rocking horse pooh. The plans Panuku have are huge and do not include bugger all catering for berth holders.

But people are working hard to introduce common sense, remove the on land not berth holder only focus, NO apartments, NO foreign owner, all of which are in people plans, some being very active plans, as I write this. If we get our way the place run by the users for the users with the ownership retained by the council.

Don't hold to much hope for a big complex with many options or much competition. Also as the council will be the building owner the lease costs are what you'd expect from a near monopoly. Hence the building has been being 'sold' for 2-3 years and no ground has been turned. But watch this space, it is getting close to happening.

Next time KM you are doing snuggly cuddly time with Tony Skelton ask for a please explain as to how the building platform on open public space ever came into existence.

Tony bangs on endlessly about how he designed Westhaven however in secrecy the St Marys Bay Residents Assoc signed off on the very land deal you are moaning about.

Talk to Ron if you need any further clarity.

Be nice to find out who the liquidator is and maybe there will be a "second" sale with more aggressive pricing?

Especially once all the stock ends up in a warehouse somewhere which will start to cost as time wears on.

It's a voluntary liquidation and there is other reasons behind it than financial. Remember there's other nz marine companies that need to be paid out of this so the liquidator has a job to get the maximum amount of money they can it's not just about having a fire sale so you can get cheap gear.

Spinlock discounts weren't great at all, tiller extension down from $500 to $456. On the shelf at Burnsco $399.

Not only on the shelf, but on the website with free delivery. Sailors corner were over 10 years behind with their website.

But as mentioned above this liquidation wasn't about financial reasons.

Yes, and its a sad thing when a business of long standing like that closes - must be hard for the owner. But by the same token, people expect at a sale, and perhaps more so at a liquidating sale to get a good price. I think the point a few people are making is was:  it really such a good sale/liquidation when the same item is on available at other places for less.

If the stuff on the shelves is worth so much less than the sticker price, maybe it isn’t / shouldn’t be ‘voluntary liquidation’ after all. If it is, and they are fully solvent, no reason to dishonour gift vouchers as all creditors are going to get paid....

One problem that imho appears quite clear here are people's perceptions...

You hit that on the head.

So as someone whose owed money from this liquidation so yes I have facts I fully want the liquidator to get as much money as possible so that other businesses that are owed money get paid.

Yes some gear might go cheap later on in the liquidation but it's up to the liquidator to get as much money back from the stock value as possible.

Hope you get your money if that's the case gappy.

The liquidation document is available for all to see on the companies office website.

Reason for insolvency The Director advised that the reason for insolvency was due to difficult trading conditions and legal issues and associated costs which arose in previous years along with rental and long-term leasing issues at the property at which they retail from.

Notice how the shareholders have taken security over their own current accounts with the company to make sure they get paid before the unsecureds. That’s low

Gappy appears to have a charge over their stock still in the shop at least.

I actually dealt with Sailors Corner quite a bit because I knew a lot of the staff. However it hurt when none of them were on duty and I had to pay full price. I’d usually skip across the road where the discounts applied no matter who served you.

Burnsco must be laughing all the way to the bank being the only chandler down there now. There are a few specialists but they don’t open the hours.

Yup and even a deticated fishing shop couldn't survive down there but now two big retailers have gone there could be an opportunity.

We aren't owed a massive amount but will be interesting to see if we get it

I thought the America's Cup was going to be this massive boon for the marine industry!?

Instead marine industries are closing down or moving out at an alarming rate right from the vicinity of the largest marina in the southern hemisphere a couple years before the so called "Bonanza Event" called the America's Cup is going to happen.

Something doesn't smell right about all this.

Zozza, look to the council. In the early nineties you could moor your boat in westhaven and WALK to 2 sailmakers a sparmaker, 4 chandlaries, 2 outboard mechanics, 2 canvas/squab manufacturers, 2 steelworkers plus a half decent lunchbar and 2 good yachtie friendly drinking establishments. All within a 300m radius or so of Sailors Corner.

So the answer is rates, car parking and greed so your standard Auckland gripe.

Boy I'm feeling old now!!

I actually think highly of Burnsco, they have a lot of good people working there, invariably experienced boaties with great knowledge.

I've noticed over many years that if you meet decent people at the front of a company, the senior people tend to be the same, a good culture in other words.

Perhaps this a simple situation where a competitor has done a better job and is more successful.

The Westhaven 3, due to their very close proximity, did have a impact on retail prices. Now the 3 is 1 it will be interesting to see how that aspect pans out.

I would imagine Burnsco in Westhaven were charging the same prices as all their other stores. So unless they were matching or bettering their neighbours on a case by case basis, there wouldn't be much of a change?

Like gas stations?

Agree with JB on the staff and service at Burnsco and found SC to be poorly stocked but was open on Easter Monday

Burnsco will surely be the frontrunner to occupy the new building development mooted for the western end of Westhaven Marina.

Does the J Pier reconfigure put the Mullet boats berths at risk.

Marine-Village.png

The Westhaven Marine Village – The Westhaven Marine Village has strong tenant interest and resource consent. This iteration of the project is smaller than previous proposals, and will extend from just south of the marina office, to before the bathroom building by the Sales Pier. We will advise you when timeframes are confirmed.  Associated with this we are starting to investigate a project to reconfigure J Pier as a pier where boats for sale can be berthed in public view.

Does it make sense for Burnsco to move from their current locale to J Pier - I'm not sure it does.  They don't just supply to the private individual but also to industry players as I discovered when trying to secure a replacement item - the stock kept getting earmarked for an industry purchaser and it took a bit of extra "effort" for the staff on the floor to get me one.

That said I buy (what little I actually do) from Burnsco on Mt Wellignton Highway and Smart Marine on Lunn Ave.  and have nothing but good words to say about the staf in both shops.  They will always get something in for you if its not in stock, will always call when its in etc etc.  But when it comes to purchasing anything for the boat I always try and use the smaller operators first preferrably nearby - keeping it locally competitive by helping these guys turn a profit.
