Rainbow II

Has Rainbow II undergone another restoration?

A new article in the latest BoatingNZ magazine hints at a new restoration, then only talks about the 2013/14 work.

Strangely they also claim that the One Ton Cup Revisited never happened in 2015, and that some other event took place a year later!

Boating NZ themselves published a few articles about this in 2015.  I guess we can't expect much memory or research from publishers these days...

They could always have checked crew.org, there are 3 different threads on here about it going back to 2013.

"Rainbow shines again

Rainbow ll – the 36-foot legend that kick-started New Zealand’s ‘modern’ yacht racing pedigree in 1969 – is back in the water after an extensive restoration. A handful of players contributed to her improbable salvation – including her original owner.  Lawrence Schäffler."

The article in Boating NZ was notable for its lack of research and poor journalism .

My brother has an agreement with the Trust ( John Street) that owns Rainbow and did a 12 month renovation which basically consisted of modernising her interior , freshening up the exterior and general maintenance . She is more cruising friendly now and did a 3 week trip up to the Bay at Xmas but with the goal of minimising any increase in weight there were limitations but she certainly is looking better for it and still is a delight to sail .

Well spotted Elly, they obviously forgot the very successful revisited in 2015, where some of us sailed with great cameraderie just like the old days, notably people strolling past the Volvo boats commenting -that cant be the real Rainbow 11 ? When we pointed out her neighbours -Waianiwa then the Farr and Lidgard one tonners they forgot the Volvo boats and came for a look.

It was also great to see Bruce Farr, Ron Holland, John Street, Peter Cornes etc get together after all this time. There were one or two old names on our boats too- Chris Bouzaid, Roy Dixon, Ken Fyfe, Rosco Guineven, Kumi Kelly, Ray Haslar the list goes on, Falconer the younger entertaining with a petrol powered blender in the Viaduct another good memory.

2016 is an invention of Boating NZ
