Our way fwd out of this for small business

Recommended Posts

I was listening to Grant Robertson on tv3 this morning. He made a comment that I thought was concerning. "If you are a viable business".
The comment was in regards to provisional tax and how a business would be able to claim back in their next tax yr. I was thinking that surely the best way forward would be to drop Provisional tax. That is money that a Busin.....well we all know how it works. Surely this is a nuts idea. Businesses are going to be struggling to get their ball rolling again. Having to pay provisional is going to kill many small businesses. And that was where Robertson's comment came in that any viable business would be able to afford to pay it. I really don't think he gets it.

Maybe if all the government went 7 weeks with no pay, then took a 50% cut for the next 6 months and double all their compliance costs. They might start to get a feeling of what's going on.

There is nothing 'marine' about this thread. All the covid / world ending stuff is in smalltalk. Every now and then I want to pretend nothing is wrong and just read sh*t about boats, sailing and water

d-f - just . don't . engage .

It is the  same line of argument he used to justify the 1 April increase in the minimum wage in spite of the lockdown. The government has no idea what it is like to run a small business and have the socialist mindset that you can tax a country into prosperity.

(IT - this subject is probably best moved to Small Talk)

No don't go doing that. There is a heap of us that can't see it then and I think this is important. I think people need to not make this political. This is a genuine question or discussion about small business surviving.

Back to subject, I was concerned by his blanket statement re "viable business". I know of several small business owners that will not be able to pay provisional tax based on their last years earnings and then have to wait an entire year to get that payment balanced up. It will simply drive them into the ground.

If you banned yourself from Smalltalk cause you keep on getting into arguments, well, why is that my problem?

As a note, Sailing Anarchy now has a Covid section, so they could clear all the insidious virus threads out of the rest of their sailing website... so you can actually enjoy some sailing threads 'n all...

Actually it is attitudes like your that cause the arguments. Simply and as also used to be said, you don't have to read a post and your certainly don't have to reply to one if you don't want to.
But Ok, if that is how you all feel,  IT go ahead and delete. Don't bother moving it. Waste of time if no wants to discuss.
