... I'd been talking to Wayne earlier in the day and when I wrote the statement his boat's name, Space Station, ended up on the page instead of Soundtrack.

There still seems to be some confusion ..... :?:

Oh dear (or should I say Doh ear)

Charlatan Race Report.

Went for the conservative start with white sails until the gybe. Made the start line run too early, should have done one more loop, ran straight up the line trying not to get pushed over in the tide. Started right on teh line in clear air but poor boat speed, could have been worse.

Got to North Head in good order and got the gybe in early as per the plan. Went for the heavy runner kite. Desciding between fractional and mast head was straight forward, we only have one halyard! Good speed and pulling away from others up to Tiri. After Tiri the wind goes softer and backs to 190T. Start running VMG angles and gybe out to take advantage of the wind angle while its back.

The big question, inside or outside the H&C's? Tuts now casting calling 230 240T. We gybe back near flat rock to gain height near Cape Rodney, did a number on some guys close in to Kawau. Had a 1020 (I think) close on our tail between Takatu and Cape Rodders, running the kite tight forward now working for height and holding good speed, great fun, they'd round up, we'd get away, we'd wiggle, there all over us...

Confirm we'll sail the rhumb line inside H&C's. Watching boats ahead there looks like a massive knock comming out near Bream Tail. Set up for a peel and wait for it to hit us. Perfect drop and peel to the 'gennaker' (read old MPS). Boat goes like a sack of sh*t, slow, too deep and liable to rounding up, can it and go to the #1 on outboard sheet - jib top style, now we're humming (literally) hull speed, on the rhumb line, light helm (most of the time!)

Lay just above Sail Rk. Set a track for very close to Tuts / Liz Rf. Catch some surfs off Bream Head, top speed 10.7knts (its a displacement boat...) Watching kites tryign to catch us up, they start gaining, do a wiggle, we pull away, they start gaining, shows us their antifoul then start falling away to the Poor knights.. haha We hold our height on whites so we can use it to run deeper with the kite later.

Peel to the heavy kite off Rimarriki or somewhere near there, running it tight trying not to fall off the rhumb line too much. Wind is anything from 250T and puffy to 180T and 3knts. Neil & JK do a bute job bringing us into Cape Brett, running the kite strapped in Code 0 fashion. Have a blinder getting through the gap two boats underneath us and one above us sitting their like ducks, never dreamed of getting through the gap so quickly.

Peel to the #1 and do a long board straight over to Nine Pine. Plenty of boats above us mucking around in the soft stuff by the Twins. Shifty conditions up and down 5-10 degress every 30 s or so. Rested drivers pay off here with good concentration, sail straight past boats that look like they are sitting there pointing too high, nice. Wind stiffens to 9-10 knts bending around the headland near Nine Pine, bit of tide coming out of Kerikeri inlet but the wind is the money.

Get up to Black Rocks in good order, then things start getting sticky, vry light, shifty, we start chasing our tails. Just get enough breeze to get over to Tapeka and cross the finsh line with a solid 2knts boat speed... 5:02am. Some big div three boats around us, nice.

2nd on line, 2nd on handicap, div 5, Stocked! Perfect start to our 'offshore' season. Several firsts for us, didn't get a kite wet in any drops, the letter box is a massive difference to our old 'Sandford' drops. Kept teh boat moving in the light, our achilles heel. Came up with a tactical plan based on the conditions of the day, and executed it, and great crew work.

Cheers

High Voltage report.

We got a good start about 1/3rd of the way down the line with the aim of soaking to the inside for the gybe. The plan worked and we pretty much lead the fleet (apart from Beau who was already at kawau!) out of the harbout with Mr Wolf, truxton, frenzy and nosaka right with us. Nosaka and frenzy slowly rolled away ahead. it was a flat run to flat rock so we were crossing gybes with a few boats. We decided on the early gybe back along the coast as there is allways forward breeze after kawau and it usually fills in thru the northern entrance of kawau. alot of boats carried on offshore and lost bigtime. the wind slowly went forward but was still only 10-15kts. we were comfy with a gennaker and staysail set doing 9-11kts. we could see alot fo the boats ahead droping their kite in a massive knock with plenty of puff and decided that was our time to get offshore. sure enough once the puff hit us we had plenty on, sitting on 12-15kts and 40 degrees off course, but we were going fast and in the direction we wanted to go. we dropped the staysail to help keep the boat on its feet and went hooning. slowly we lifted and came in just below the last chick. we were surprised to see BMW come in from behind us here, dont know what happend to them? the next obstical was the poor nights which we were struggling to lay. we had to work it hard. Skinner in the truxton was slowly pulling away at the tight angle, we just couldnt match there height and speed.

The wind started to lighten and we could see a bunch of boat inshore that looked light. we lifed into the breet at an awesome angle and were stoked to see that the group of boats just to windwards were all the 40fters so we went around brett just behind them all and in front of the tail end of A div, we all cheered when we heard force 11 call in behind us!

the breeze was really soft for the beat, around 6-8kts and we just had to keep the boat moving. It was here we realised that we had almost shared the tiller clean off the stock and there was only about 10% (5mm) of stainless on one side still holding, the tiller was bent up at about 15 degrees to port. the pork chop was closing in fast and we had to hold them out so ended up doing a few slam dunks near the finish to lock them in and beat them by a few boat lengths. then we got drunk and turned up the stereo.

Overall a great result for us, the first of the true caravans and 12th overall, and we had a great time.

whats news...was that you up to weather of us when ya prod flew off? troubles getting a headsail up after that?

Yeah Col, the prod was a bit mangled and it took us some time to clear it away enough to get something else up. Gutted that the bob stay broke as we were pretty happy with how we were going at that stage.
