erice 357
i can't imagine how the republicans are going to get out of the hole they have dug for the usa with their continuing support of trump 300,000 covid deaths is supposed to be swept under the carpet? death threats to election officials for doing their job? next step is the junta's death squads Death threats are on the rise. Local and state election officials are being hounded into hiding. A Trump campaign lawyer is declaring publicly that a federal official who defended the integrity of the United States election should be "drawn and quartered" or simply shot. "Death threats, physical threats, intimidation — it's too much, it's not right," said Gabriel Sterling, a Republican elections official in Georgia who implored Trump to "stop inspiring people to commit potential acts of violence." "I do not think this goes away on January 20," Eric Coomer, security director for Dominion Voting Systems, said from the secret location where is hiding out from death threats. "I think it will continue for a long time." https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/biden-transition-trumps-grievances-feed-menacing-undertow-after-us-election/2SMPD3E73TFTEP7N2Q6GD7WRNQ/ aardvarkash10

There is strong evidence (for the US) that the vast majority of political death threats come from right wing white males. (Trump does get threatened too, and that is wrong as well.) But, the vast majority of threats overall in the US tend to come from white men who support right-wing causes. https://qz.com/1578862/arrests-for-death-threats-against-us-politicians-rose-in-2018/
erice 357
CDC Director Robert Redfield told an event hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce that the United States could start losing around 3000 people - roughly the number that died in the attacks of September 11, 2001 - each day over the next two months. "The mortality concerns are real and I do think unfortunately before we see February, we could be close to 450,000 Americans that have died from this virus," Redfield said. The US death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at around 273,000. Meanwhile, the administration of outgoing President Donald Trump has yet to articulate an effective strategy to contain the virus beyond promoting the development of a vaccine, which could be rolled out later this month but faces an uphill battle amid a sceptical public and logistical challenges. The Republican president's few public appearances recently had been dedicated to efforts to overturn the results of the November 3 election won by Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, who will assume office on January 20. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2020/12/coronavirus-top-us-health-boss-warns-covid-19-will-soon-kill-as-many-americans-as-9-11-every-single-day.html
erice 357
79 years ago this week, an attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, with 2,403 American deaths. President Roosevelt rallied to unify all Americans, declaring that the day would live forever in infamy. A great movement ensued in America, moving individuals and institutions to serve and sacrifice for a greater good. On Thursday last week, 79 years later, we experienced even greater single day loss of life and suffering, due to Covid-19, with 2,857 victims. A horrifying result of catastrophic American public health policy over the past 11 months. Facing unprecedented death and suffering of Americans, President Trump rigorously claimed that he was the real victim, remaining silent about Pandemic and its victims. This is not political, folks. It’s purely moral and cannot be dismissed. It seems there will be much greater loss, before vaccines availability or new leadership.
AJ Oliver 116
Our long national nightmare is over . . (plagiarizing Gerry Ford alert.) This right wing extremist got the axe on the first day . . (Slate) Biden sacked Kathleen Kraninger, who was confirmed as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in 2018. Kraninger, who had no previous experience in consumer protection, immediately tried to undermine the agency’s role as a watchdog for the financial sector. She scrapped a landmark rule that restricted predatory payday lending, pressuring staff to downplay the resulting harm to consumers. And she refused to enforce a federal law that protected military personnel against a broad range of predatory lending. Her decision yanked federal support from military families who were defrauded by lenders. In the midst of the pandemic, Kraninger also approved a rule that allows debt collectors to harass Americans with limitless texts and emails demanding repayment. We want revenge for police murders, imperialist wars, and fascist massacres,” read a banner they marched under. Portland has been the scene of unrest for months, with civil rights, anarchist and anti-fascist protesters scuffling with police and occasionally with right-wing militias and Trump supporters. The protests began in the summer as part of nationwide demonstrations against racism and police brutality following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis in May after police pinned his neck to the ground for nearly nine minutes. Eight people were arrested in Portland on suspicion of offenses(sic) including rioting and reckless burning, while two people were arrested in Seattle, one for assault and another for property damage, police said. Before descending on the Democratic Party office, some protesters from a group of about 150 scuffled with police on bicycles, police said in a statement. In Seattle, police said multiple sites had been vandalized and posted pictures of the damage, including what appeared to be of an Amazon Go store. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2021/01/anti-fascist-protesters-vandalise-democrat-party-buildings-scuffle-with-police.html
