Had a scary email in from freight people about how ships are now having to wait 10 plus days to get into Port Akl. So that means a lot of gear due here for Xmas will not make it. It also means the shipping companies are saying 'f*ck that for a joke' and are about to dump containers off at North Port. One ship that was told it can get into Port Akl on Dec 23rd is berthing at North Port on Sunday and will drop it's 1300 containers off there.

The shipping companies have pulled out the 'Force Majeure' clause so whomever those 1300 containers are bound for now has to pay for a truck to go get them back from Whangarei.

And there is now very real concerns the lack of infrastructure at North Port will collapse under this unexpected onslaught.

Add in the cluster that is PoT and the train up to Metroport and it tis a wee mess out there. Even 3-4 day delays down in Lyttleton.

So if you need it for Xmas/January I'd be buying today before stocks run out, if you're not too late already.

And be prepared to pay more to cover these possibly considerable extra costs.

I have a box due in Akl on the 8th which is now the 6th so all fingers and toes crossed that the earlier date means it's got a slot to get in. If not there will be some boats anchoring on some very rotten gear until mid January at least. Ouch!!!! As it is we've already been told 2 large anchor shipments and a rope shipment due this/last week now won't even pull into a port until a day or 2 before Xmas.

Luckily I've been shopping already but have been running into lots of 'out of stock' on some things I'd have prefered but managed to find a OK replacement for most things.

Crazy days.......

Yeah I’m aware trucks are the only option right now ....im Just comparing the future upgraded northland line with the current auck/ham/Tauranga link that seems to work ok passing through all 3 major c

POAL just got donged $540,000 for killing one of their minions, didn't they? Things must be going swimmingly over there at the moment. Loved the story about one of their robotic straddle lifters jumping a retaining wall. Apparently the geo-fence stopped this 70T monster killing anyone...

Hay KM, what is your stock of 8mm chain like? I really need 25 m plus a splice onto some really nice, soft and pliable warp. And of course I need it before Christmas ;-)

If I pop in next week will Alan yell at me?

Alternatively, when are you opening after Christmas?

Automation problems-ha, if they hadnt laid off the proper wharfies and had them all on deck there would be no delays-blaming automation 8 months after they said they had an issue just doesnt stack up . We have had a shipment diverted to Melbourne because the ship was not prepared to sit in the Gulf waiting- now pushed to receive it before Christmas and its marine gear that goes mainly at this time of year. They seem to be able to pay for young PR boys who spout that it will be alright but we dont know when...

All power to Tauranga for increasing trains to Auckland metroport it worked for my specialist car imports. Three hours after ship docked container on train heading to Southdown.

Our latest electric truck: 18 days from China to Auckland.

The charger for that truck: 2 months and four days, it is now in Auckland, but no you can't have it yet.

My understanding is that some shipping lines have stopped taking bookings down this way for a few weeks, just too hard.

Our last quote was USD5200 for a 40', close to double what it was. Happy to hear from anyone getting cheaper offers than that.

My new toy is on a container ship from SE Asia... original ETA to POA was mid-Nov now mid-Dec; will be touch & go whether it arrives before Xmas. Rates to NZ increased 35%+ the week after I booked (and paid). Covid rules are the primary cause according to the line.

It would be a great case study in how not to run a port....unfortunately.

The automation is just one of a number of issues they are facing, most are self made, but not all.

It will be Q2 or beyond before they are on top of it I am sorry to say.

Use of Northport is extremely unhelpful to solving the problems as well as it is pulling trucks off 'quick' round trips from PoAL to local, to having to go up empty and grab 1 or 2 per day. Its going to add to the dwell times, not help them and please no one fantasize over rail... it is a waste of space, and even if it was working, which it is not it still would be... I cant think of a bigger waste of money right now, or ever than trying to make the northern line teu suitable. To do so is for political reasons only, not economic

Good point regarding the rail but how would it differ from the Auck/Ham/Tauranga link ?

I’m no expert but isn’t north port to Auckland a shorter link than the dogleg from Tauranga through Hamilton to Auckland

Trucks are the only option North and thats only if they are not carrying elsewhere.Driver shortage not helping either. But wait the Govt annouced a week or so ago that they have 100 inmates who could potentially get there HT.Will they pass a drug test though??
