Government to ban commercial skippers from discarding fish overboard

The Government is making the biggest changes to fisheries management in decades, banning commercial fishing skippers from discarding fish overboard, Newshub can reveal.

A ban on discards means all quota fish pulled up - regardless of size - will have to be brought back to the wharf and tallied up against the big fishing firms' total allowable catch.

"Obviously if fish are put back dead in the sea, it's not good for the fishery, so we're changing the rules to say, 'if you catch a fish then you've got to land it,'" Parker told Newshub.

Brought 1 packet of bait with me. Got 5 meals of fish in the freezer.  I didn't know winter fishing could be this good.

Now have to wait a couple of days for the SWly to arrive.

Well done.winter fishing can be  good.water temp is still warm.

Not really Waiheke but a big slap in the face for Stuart Nash.

https://www.newsroom.co.nz/court-overturns-ministers-decision-on-tarakihi-fishing-limits

The High Court has found that the former minister of fisheries, Stuart Nash, incorrectly set the catch limit on Tarakihi by taking into account industry proposals over official advice.

“When deciding how long a fish stock should take to recover, the minister should consider the biology of the fish, not a voluntary industry plan,” the court said.

This came out last yr but advocacy groups want to keep blaming commercial dredgers than rather admit that the problem is much bigger than they can handle.

Public health warning: shellfish biotoxin alert for Waiheke Island

Date: 14 December 2023

"Because of the potential health risks, New Zealand Food Safety is advising the public not to consume shellfish from Surfdale and Blackpool beaches, as well as to avoid coming into contact with the cyanobacterial mats."

"Affected shellfish include bivalve shellfish such as mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, and scallops, as well as pūpū (cat’s eyes), Cook’s turban and kina (sea urchin).

https://www.mpi.govt.nz/news/media-releases/public-health-warning-shellfish-biotoxin-alert-for-waiheke-island/

So the above warning implies that you CAN take mussels and scallops from Waiheke. Maybe the rahui is over?

That Blackpool, Surfdale situation is pretty ugly in terms of the cyanobacterial matts.. gross and not nice for cooling intake strainers.

The Rahui definitely is not over - no taking scallops or any shellfish with the exemption of kina

The MPI warning is because of toxins, there is no update on mpi to say if the rahui/ban is still in place. The only publication says closed 2yrs and that time is up.Be worth testing ??

The only mention of Rahui relates to the weed invasion.

Good to know, thanks.

However an internet search reveals no update to the original 2 year ban, which ended a few months ago. The MPI ban only covered scallop, mussel, crayfish and pāua.

It has happened last few seasons - with the predominance of E/NE winds over summer it means that Blackpool and Surfdale dont get the recirculation that a fresh SW provides and ends up providing great Algae growing conditions  - was bad last year but even worse this year with Globules of it making its way along to Putiki Bay as well....Hopefully  a few strong SW blows will shake it all up but smells terrible and definitely not what you need going into your salt water intake
