Don't ya just love dudes who play with computers. Fully charted with multi options, colours, spots and systems seemingly known only by the inhabitants of some distant planet.

The rest of us go 'Oh suppose out to Barrier then turn left for 3 stubbies, gype and hold that for 2 rums, reach off for a while so we can do lunch and big splif then just see where we are at' :) :)

We are supposed to notify coastguard of our intended course but we can change the course while we are out there. The rules are 250NM going past 4 way points. A log must be maintained during the trip as evidence and we need to call in to the coastguard at each way point.

What Fineline has described is a good way of proving what you have done but,

The requirement is to have done a passage of not less than 250nm two handed on the yacht that you've entered.

Seems quite easy and you can make it as tough as you like but the main thing is it gets you into a different thought pattern in prep for the race and everyone that does it like Chill Pill gets heaps out of it and also realises that you need to be organised to compete in this event.

Hmmm, I will now get a different mental picture any time I hear a boat calling in to say "we are out the back of the Mokes and lit up doing 10 knots". :problem:

We completed our RNI qualifier over the weekend. After looking at the forecast on Friday AM we opted to head to Cape Brett with the SE and take the sleigh ride in daylight and then start the long beat home.

The trip up was faaaast with 1 reef and the jib top. We could have put a genni up for a while but it would have been tough to keep it flying with the quartering sea. Up by the poor knights the swell was running at 4-5m and the wind was 30 gusting 35. Some great surfs and a new top speed for Fineline... 26.86kts! North head to Brett was all over in about 12hrs. We ran off behind Cape Brett for an hour or so to get some shelter and pull the second reef in then turned around and headed back into it; 25 gusting 35 SE pretty much all the way home.

The beat home was just plain hard. Without any weight on the rail we didn't point that well and the sea was still pretty big so lots of work on the helm. It rained most of the way and we took lots of waves over the boat so ended up with a lot of water in the bilge. It looks like Northstar electronics are no more waterproof than Navman; the newish chart plotter started to go mental and gave up at then Hen and Chicks and then the newish Nexus instruments packed it in about an hour later although that one looks more like it could be water in the wiring somewhere.

With the extra run-off behind Brett and some long tacks on the way home we ended up completing 275NM. Certainly a good shakedown for RNI but it has given me a whole bunch of stuff to fix before we'll be ready to go.

Hi Fineline,

We had a similar experience in M1 - a blast up north ( went past North Cape) and some "beating" in true sense of the word ...

Boat was Wet as also (in and on boat), lots to do prior to start also....
