Weiti BC - Sailutions Short Handed Series R5 - The End Game

OK what's the goss?

I hear the Weiti BC may pull yet another Ross boat out to give me grief, as if the 1 (Bump n Grind) and 1/4 (AA's keel) already aren't enough to have to watch for. It's a cunning plan to fight back using the same weapons, another 930 and even stepped it up by getting a turbo

And what's more bringing some Ross specialist sailors into the fleet as well. Mind you after his effort last weekend ............ ;)

Becoming a bit of a Ross festival up there. And who said them out of town yokels aren't smart dudes?

At least AA's crew should be able to reach the kite pole then, knot too sure if my locally sourced (a Red beach resident) can :?

Put me down for 5 mins 35 seconds Herdy. I think I'm going to nail the start this time or as least nail it KM style

The funny thing is that in this series every start I've at least been pointing at the line when the gun went. For me that is bloody wonderful, now just have to work on decreasing the distance between me and the bloody line. Luckily I do love 'the chase'.

So what's the course, all I have is finish at the top mark the 3rd time. Or is that info for Rodney ratepayers only?

I am ex-Rodney so can I get the info under some Grandfather clause?

Well KM if you're going to count AA as a quarter, don't you have to deduct a quarter from BnG with a BBW keel?

I'll put my hand up and say they aren't smart dudes if you like, I'm not afraid, I'm not even very afraid, I mean, three Ross boats isn't really much of a crowd, then of course there's the question of quality?

Geez there's some fightin' talk going on here! Do I really only qualify as a 1/4? My rudder is a Ross too! AA's pedigree is mixed. Some famous, some unknown but she's a mongrel, and by that I mean, get too close and you'll end up with teeth marks on your arse.

Barry Colson and Mark Illingworth design, construction by Hutchinsons in Tauranga but finished off by Illingworth. At some stage a Ross keel & rudder, and then more recently a Kevin Dibley designed modification to the rear half of the hull. Smith design modifications during construction. New rig design by someone at Fosters.

But she goes well - except a weeny bit sticky in the light - your average common all garden Ross 930 can actually get to see my bow when the wind drops under 5 knots! The photo you see was taken from a Ross 930! :wtf:

Hey, no 88's have been brave enough to come and play with the assorted Ross parts and a all Ross boat so one could argue the quality is quite high. We are talking quality knot quantity, bit like Ferraris and Kate Bosworths ;)

Actually I think Bumps rig might knot be all Ross either now I warm up the grey matter. Whatever the collection is it would be nice if it slowed down a little :)

Sorry for casting aspersions apon your Rudder AA. That is quite a mix you have there, quite a wild mix indeed.

average common all garden Ross 930

Oh so we are stepping up the smack talk are we. Careful you don't make me angry, I just hate it when I turn green and swell up. 930 cockpits aren't that big you know and I am running short on shirts. There is also the risk you may get a face full of a big green appendage swinging in the breeze and I'm knot talking a boats prod

Good to see Ross boats out there taking everyone on.

KM I'll take 1:57 after the start!

Hows that for a target for you?

Go the Ross Boats!!!!!

A shame it's not practical to bring a Farrst boat up, to give you guys a hurry along !!! . Thanks for crewing on JE at the weekend Mr Herd  .

Hey Knot Me I like your self confidence! No need to threaten me with your gangrenous appendage though. It's lookin very light tomorrow :( so I'll start eating humble pie in advance.

Yes the Bump is a BBW rig, keel, rudder so in fact it's a Ross hull only. Exact percentage of Rossness? 50% maybe? Nice boat though and I think KM he gonna whip yo' ass tomorrow!!!

Who said anything about a farrst boat? We have a couple of 1104 race and a 9.2 but that's about it. If KM can make it up here you can too!

Fish has gone quiet - you racing tomorrow Fish?

Don't mind me, I'm just sitting quietly in the corner here watching your guys talk trash

You guys are off the hook, no risk or an ORIGINAL quality Birdsal showing you guys up, we're hauling out at almost the exact time the race starts. Was hoping to help Dave on the committee boat, might be able to get out and verify the finish times maybe. Need to do some maintenance before the Winter Series. Might need to do some mods to slow the boat down (i.e. help the handicap). Have to change something, can't be the only original boat in the fleet

Since we're talking trash, is it true BnG has a trim tab fitted? the seem to point higher than the Sky Tower :silent: :silent:

Me confident??? Never confident until the finished line is crossed, contrary to what impressions I may like to imply here. I would say - Cocky, smartarse or maybe just a good ol sh*t stirrer is probably more accurate.

Hey Mr AA now listen up goodly. This negativity from you is impacting on my aura and it is a sexy aura that doesn't need playing with.

I trundled myself up to WBC with no idea if I was going to be a front end of the fleet player or knot. No idea what I was going to run into bar a Red boat known to be quick. Due to timing issues with my start of R1 I never even saw you. So be it I thought, it is a quick boat. As the series panned out I trundled up again and spent time looking at your transom, some due to self-inflicted timing issues but I persevered and low and behold I managed to wiggle me old shitter in front of you a few times. This has been much to my and a few others surprise, quite probably yours as well sometimes.

Long short short - If I can jiggery pokery my old shitter to the point I'm looking at your bow, you can just as easily do the same to me even in the lite stuff. The race isn't over until bows cross the finish line and as I have demonstrated the weirdest sh*t can happen when you least expect it.

To be honest I do think we'll be giving you grief tomorrow or at least bloody hope too, based on the last few races in what the weather looks to be, but there's no way in hell I'm sitting here thinking I've beaten you yet.

You should knot be sitting there thinking the opposite. Think slow and you'll go slow.

I will see you at 100% fight fit in body (willing) and mind on the start line tomorrow (+/- 15mins  ). And we'll all wait until the finish line is crossed to see who eats what pie.

The nice apple pie D1 is cooking me this arvo is excluded. She's bloody good at it so come the finish it won't be that as I will have already scoffed it :)

But then you will have Squid aboard so maybe your thinking is indeed ........

HeHeHe, Yes I will have the venerable Captain "if there's a whisper of wind I can feel it, smell it, sense it before it's happened" Squid on board. He's the Stevie Wonder of sailing, cos he can be mid sentence, down in the cabin, covered in a kite he's packing and he'll pop his head up through the companionway and say "I've just felt a 0.000005 degree windshift, lets tack." Dunno how he does it!

If there really is no wind then I hope he brings along some of the rum sponsors product. I can tell you that I wish I had it on the last race. It wouldn't have helped my sailing but then again I wouldn't have cared about you sailing past me like I was concreted to the bottom KM!

Damn, latest update from Metservice still saying 15 knots which means it will be 5

My Goodness - what a load of dribble! Pleased to see your all wondering the pedigree of Bump n Grind.....BBW designed keel, rudder, rig with a couple of extra modifications added in from us as we build her......Ross hull, yes, but thats about it. Nice to see we can chase the 930's round

Sorry - no trim tab - but thats bloody brillient idea for the next one!

Bring on tomorrow guys - all or nothing I say......!

Put my money on 9-12 knots and Knot Me - I suspect you have finally learnt the time it takes to make the start line!....but feel free to take your time.....

See you all on the water.......

It seems the fleet is far more confident about my result than I am. Personally I think the Bump is the boat to watch as it's getting bloody faster each race, the bugger

And a little birdie tells me one of them 88 things maybe lurking now as well. Now that could cause issues if the wind is lite, they have bigger sails than me :(

Mind you so does everyone else bar that Tracker :)

Right off to head for the start now. Sounds like I'll need to be on the line on time this week.

If I'd left Herdyville yesterday, I still wouldn't make the start on time ! Mind you, I was a bit late for the last single handed (KM disease !) - 2nd to last to start, 2nd on line at the finish. Only beaten by one of those pesky 930's !!!!! JE is a 1020

Good luck to you all for tomorrow. John.

Well, even though that scaly reptile arrived last night and spent the night in the river he still managed to be late fo the start, albeit by a lesser amount than previously. I suggest we have a whip round and buy the poor bugger an alarm clock

Best days racing I've had in ages. After 3.5 hours racing four boats croswsed the line within 60secs. We lead from the first mark but were never comfortable, never very far ahead and any of the four could have nailed it at just about any time. On the flat run we had to sit in a hole and watch the aother three roar up in a new breeze eating up our hard won lead - nerve wracking.

I'm sunburnt sore and very happy.

Congrats to KM for the Hcap win and the series (pity I wasn't able to race in the other three races)

Once the word gets out how good this series is I expect a bigger contingent of you ditch dwellers to turn up.

Cheers Squid. It was an excellent day indeed. An extra long Olympic course (windward beat of 3 miles) The absolute best race I've had for a while! No seriously, it was a great day. Still not the best conditions for the Ant but enough for us to hold our own on boat speed and the rest was picking the shifts which proved to be everyones doing and undoing at some stage. Yeah good old KM came up north on Friday night and was still late! Remarkable, but nonetheless at least he started in the same minute we all did. He can thank his lucky stars the committee boat started the sequence a minute late - which I suspect was done deliberately to give the stragglers a fighting chance! Aanyway KM must be related to Bill Clinton cos he's the Comeback Kid! But he wasn't having it all his own way this week, no parking lots for him to sail around this week - oh no. We had our usual conservative start while Bump n Grind had his usual on the line on the gun start and was just smoking along. I usually take a few minutes to settle down, but today we got in the groove quickly. We gained and lost huge on each beat as did everyone else, but worthy of note was Keith on Mardi Gras who was sailing single handed and two thirds of the way up the first beat crossed us clear ahead absolutely smoking! Those Doyle Stratis Cruising Laminate sails sure look good and have improved his upwind speed and pointing by miles! He was never going to be able to foot it with us on the downwind legs though, but he gave us an early wake up call that we needed to be making no mistakes.

Tickled Pink (Modified Y88) was out for a day race and decided he wanted to mess with us and ruin our series result. He kept tacking on top of us and forcing us into soft air but then once he left it 5 seconds too late and we powered through to leeward and sailed around him and crossed ahead before the top mark. He would later regret messing with us! And so it went for the whole race, with the Ant being ahead but never by much. We had a healthy lead going into the last run and were happy with where we were when it all went soft and the other 3 brought a new breeze with them from the top mark. It is a real pisser just knowing there is nothing you can do about it. And the bloody Reptile doing what he does best and coming from behind too bloody fast! Even when the breeze arrived we were about 100 metres to the right of where we wanted to be and it took us a while to get into the same pressure, and so with a mile to the bottom mark the race started again. We threw in a gybe, then hoisted the headsail and then dropped the kite right on the mark – damn fine crew work from us both I might add!

As we neared the top mark we started to wonder where the patrol boat was. As we neared the supposed finish we saw the boat coming out but we weren’t sure if who was going to get there first, them or us! The Bump was right there, and The Reptile had been making good gains on this last beat. Tickled Pink had taken a flyer out to port and it had paid off. He was coming in fast. We looked at the situation and realised that although we could beat the Bump on line we weren’t going to get the corrected result. The Reptile was close but out of range for a hit on us. But I had a score to settle with Tickled pink for messing with me earlier, so we stayed over on starboard and sailed 20 metres further just so that we could tack on top of them and stick them in the gas pipe. They were forced to tack away and therefore overstand the finish. With around 100 metres to the finish the patrol boat put down its anchor and we bore down on the line and the Bump had to put in two more tacks to make the line. So we crossed around 12 seconds ahead and heaved a sigh of relief.

Oh did I mention that Kan’t Know the trimaran was racing too? No one ever saw him and he finished 50 minutes ahead of us. Blitzed the field.

For us, this was our clash of the titans. Four similar paced boats, there was never a comfortable moment. This was positive stress at its best!

Thanks to The Bump for keeping us honest, thanks to Suburban Reptile for coming up to our neck of the woods and showing us how it’s done! You’re a slouch getting there but once across the line you’re a canny adversary. Hope we’ll see you next series. Cheers to Tickled Pink for adding some colour to the day. No hard feelings huh!

Put my money on 9-12 knots and Knot Me - I suspect you have finally learnt the time it takes to make the start line!

Ha take that! Proved you wrong on both counts didn't we :) or more a :( really. But at least each time it is getting closer. So by 2015 I think we'll make a start line with time to spare.

16 odd miles to the start line. Left 9.5 hours before the start and......... quite frankly I now just give up.

Great evening 2 sail up to Arkles, a slow speed motor up the river on a bloody dark nite but didn't touch land. Parked up at the WBC jetty and watched some of the local wildlife fishing. A few beers and a hauling of the crew up to the top of the rig at midnight. One of the fishos cast went well wrong and the thought of a couple of fish hooks, complete with big lumps of squid (the fish sort knot the Crew.org sort), being left up there wasn't that exciting. He's terrified of heights but smaller than me and was well liquored up so all was good.

Morning comes, and what a tranquil place to have a morning, just lovely. Coffee brewing while chatting and watching a few locals slip some boats. Looks like the tsunami caused a few boats to bottom out with resulting leaks appearing around rudders and so on. 10 to 9 and plenty of time.......Oh hang on... Oh f*ck me, Olympic courses don't start to windward.... it's a offshore breeze... 3 ml legs... Crap the start is 3 mls more away that is what's in our heads. Motor to max revs. Out of river at 6.2 knots..... 4.0..3.5..3.0..2.5..2.0 metres of depth... SLOW QUICK...... idle over bar gently but good no bad touching. Motor back to max. Sails up. Motor off and turn back into a yacht as approaching Start boat and with the sounds of a gun ringing in our ears.... Crap, knot again :( Oh well, lets go hunting to the sounds of intense laughter from the patrol boat crew. They do seem to be enjoying my starts a little too much

AA, Bump, Tickled Pink (one of them pesky 88 thingys) and Mardi Gras ahead but behind a Kan't know (a F9.2 tri I think). Kan't Know gone like a Offshore race fizz and probably finished before the rest of us even made the 1st top mark and looking very good as she did it.

We spent way too long on 1st beat getting sh*t sorted so fell back a bit from the other 4 ahead. Just got settled and up to speed before realising the top mark we were going for wasn't the one the rest of the fleet was, bugger. Note to self - if a red mark is permanently in Arkles, nearly direct upwind don't assume, look around harder...... Oh well now stuck hard to the right of track. Get sh*t sorted yet again and by the top mark (the proper one) just managed to squeeze around a boat length ahead of MG.

Now newbie foredeck monster (all 4ft 6" of him, on a good day ;) ) sets up kite, keep calm don't panic, no cock-ups please. Kite up nicely if knot after covering a little more ground than we would have liked but a great 1st go indeed. The chase is on with quite a gap to pull back. Sneak up a little, pull off a good clean gybe, sneak up a smidgen more but nothing large on the TP and Bump but AA looks to have opened up a fraction.

Round bottom mark and the fleet tends left. No point following we think so go right. Knot looking flash, bugger. Little shift to the right and hello we've 1/2 the gap, a nice flyer that worked for a change. Now have the 88 TP hard in the sites so a wiggle here and a wiggle there and manage sneak in front just before the top mark. Around the top mark closer to the lead bunch. And I mean bunch, none of those 3 were letting each other away with anything at all. Kite up sweet, a fast learner is our newbie Tedric. Looking back and 3 boat lengths behind the 88 has a nice twisted kite, Oh dear, how sad, Oh yeah that's damn handy :) AA and Bump going wide on the flat off with AA flying some red kite roughly the size required to wrap Rangitoto in one go, a freaking monster. Just how many kite does that boat have????

Just enough puff for our old family cruiser to lurk flatter and more direct to the mark. Making a nice big dent in the gap, closing fast and forcing the front 2 to sail a bit flatter than they would have liked I suspect. Hey, all good for us. Comes the bottom mark and AA round for the blat to the finish with a small gap back to Bump and a smaller gap back to us who had opened a nice gap on the, no need to worry about now, 88. All head right then Bump goes left, AA continues but doesn't look flash, we split the difference and the 88 off gawd knows where, to see the AC boats by the looks but it sure looks well wrong.

AA tacks onto a nice lift, bastard. We are sneaking up on Bump, nice. WHOT THE F...... the fecking 88's pulled off a stunner and looks to be doing a buffalo girls on the whole bloody fleet, double bastard. Right this is gonna be bloody close. Chuck a few tacks in working on the theory the front boats have gone defensive, the 88 didn't appear to be tacking at all fast and it's easier to tack our boat than it is to rearrange your man jewels bag. Can we force a cock-up on one of the other boats? No sadly but the gaps do decrease a little.

Tacks going here there and every way by everyone who were trying to cover everyone else. It was a bit of a giggle as it looked as if everyone was trying to do the same to everyone else so it all sort of reversed itself. AA looking good, Bump the same, the bastard 88 just nailed it right on the sweet spot and got us by 1/2 a Knats. It's all on and the line is close. Everyone comes together and the passing lanes run out, go for speed. Catching the 88, getting closer, bow on their transom, bugger over the line we all go. AA, Bump, Ticked pink and us in that order and all inside 60 secs, possibly less.

By this time Kant Know are probably already home, cleaned up, had a shag and just about ready to give birth to the result. They did have a somewhat large gap on our bunch.

A great day indeed. Close as racing with some good fun playing swappsies in positions and a bloody tight finish. What more can you ask for really. Team Reptile pretty happy they came back so well after yet another sambloic un-organised cock-up of a start especially against some very well sailed boats. That's a discreet complement to the drivers and crews, all of which worked their respective boats very tidily indeed bar one small hiccup on the Tickled.

Then followed a very nice 2 sail home via the AC boats and while watching a very fast looking set of PBO sails roaring backwards and forwards a few miles out. Also spotted a quick looking all black TP52 beast, I believe, it's a good and fast looker.

So endth a Series that was very well thought out in terms of variety, courses and the whole mix 'n match solo's combined with some mixed 2 handed's format, which is very clever. Just love that Series format, a brilliant idea I think many should take a closer look at. Many being both clubs and the racers themselves.

Once again from Team Reptile, big Thanks for the fun, seriously close racing, the well run organisation, great competitors and to the WBC for the great hospitality. We'll be back for sure. We did actually sail back to the patrol boat and plead for another start as we were actually ready by then   Sadly we have to wait a whole year they told us :(

Big Thanks especially to AA and Bump N Grind for the grief they caused us, we loved every bit of it...... well most of it :) And big Thanks to AA himself for the help and local guidance when us townies required it.

And big Ups to Eddie and the team at Sailutions for supporting the Series. Oh by the way I was in there last week and you seen the cool range of sexy blocks Sheldon are doing now. Bloody nice looking gear with good load numbers at what I thought was bloody sharp pricing.

What a place to wake up after a bit of a mast climb the nite before :)

Now the only question that has been niggling me for the last 22 hours - That call by Tickled Pink just after round the last bottom mark where they dived big time right. It just looked so so wrong but turned up to be nearly the glamour call of the whole series. Was that a flyer or did they see something the rest of us didn't? I just gotta know, some one fess up, which was it?
