We raced an upper harbour course today. The course said the 2nd mark was Meola reef (yellow bouy). All good, with the exception of the fact there is no longer a yellow bouy at Meola reef. Half the fleet raced around the White Bouy at Meola reef and half sailed around a Yellow Bouy around about Birkenhead Wharf (no it was not Pile). No alternative sailing instructions were issued to clarify the situation.

Needless to say this resulted in some post race debate. Your thoughts?

So long as the sailing instructions specifically said the Meola reef was a yellow bouy I think you could reasonably ask the RC to ditch the race.

Our sailing instructions never give the colour for normal club racing. It used to be the sun was so strong in Wellington that our marks faded to a different colour (we have set marks). These days its more likely the storms wash the marks away and they could be replaced with a different colour.

At Port Nic a couple of years ago, the local Waka club laid a mark with same number, shape and colour in the vicinity of the one we had in our SI to race around (also a laid mark).

As it was a non-champ race, 2 sets of results were published.
