Groupama sailing team have lodged a protest with the International Jury against CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand over the forestay and rigging on their boat during Leg 1. Groupama say in the protest that while racing, the CAMPER boat: "Does not positively lock its means of adjustment of the forward support of the mast - take tension on the forestay when using a strop on an articulated forestay - steady the mast when using the strop on an articulated forestay Does not have a permanent forestay - a permanent rake - a circular standing rigging Has two elements of the standing rigging near parallel Uses a device similar to a “headfoil” - a device to adjust the standing rigging for measuring standing rigging tension" The French team protested the forestay set-up on CAMPER after finishing the Iberdrola In-Port Race, the first competitive action of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12. The protest was rejected by the International Jury. “We are still awaiting full details but we’re disappointed that this action has been taken as we feel this issue has already been addressed in a full and final manner first by the arbitration panel and then by the international jury," CAMPER skipper Chris Nicholson said on Wednesday. "Our programme has always been open and above board in all aspects and we await to see if there are any new grounds on which this protest could be based on." CAMPER's forestay was also the subject of an application made to the independent arbitration panel earlier in October. Two applications were made claiming the Volvo Open 70 Interpretation Group had, in interpreting a class rule, changed that rule, something not permitted in the class rules and in the Notice of Race. The first application was made by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG on October 11. The second was made by Team Telefónica the following day. CAMPER finished Leg 1 in second place and are second overall with 29 points, two behind Team Telefónica. Groupama were third into Cape Town and are third overall with 22 points.
