Spring Regatta (first Gold Cup race) this Saturday

The Volvo-Penta RYC Spring Regatta is an Auckland yachting tradition.

We’ve been sending boats around Waiheke to start the season for over 40 years. The Spring Regatta is a great shake out race after a winter off and draws large boat numbers. In recent years the first race in the RAYC Gold Cup Series is run as part of the Spring Regatta.

It's not too late to enter. Forecast currently is for a nice 20 knot northerly.

See RYC website for all the details including notice of race.

Just been advised it's racing as schedulled.

A real pity when our Clubs can't make allowances for supporting the pinnacle event of our sport.

Is it just me? or is it too simple to delay the start and (if necessary) shorten the course?

I wonder what the Rugby Union would do?

As one of the Race Committee, I can say most, if not all Gold Cup and Spring Regatta entrants were contacted and the majority decision was to leave it as it was - this toing and froing took all afternoon. And it is not easy to just postpone and shorten a course, especially with an on the water start at Orakei.

Unsure if the Rugby Union would be able to run the Spring Regatta/Gold Cup at such short notice, even if they did delay the start....

Actually it is easy, post new start time on the notice board before 6pm and it would have all been done. That's why there is that provision in the SI's

Even now you could fly AP ashore and the lower it when the AC race is finished this giving 1 hour to get out to the start, plenty of time... Also easy, they did it 5 days in a row at Hamo race week.

Just took another look just need to post the change to SI before 0800 tomorrow morning... Still plenty of time to do it... 12 hours actually.

Something like

New start time 12:00hrs

Course as per attachment 6

Seems pretty easy really

Yes the Americas cup is important but there are many things that need to be taken into consideration when postponing or cancelling a race.

Firstly the organisation involving the race comittee and also the boat/crew who have made themselves avaliable for the whole of the Saturday to go racing along with boats being prepped for the race. Also boats out of town or outter distances of Auckland coming into compete.

Secondly as many skippers involved in the gold cup race were contacted and the question put to them with their response and the majority of all skippers contacted wanted to go ahead with the original start time.

RAYC and RYC have planned this event long in advance and with a large amount of summer racing and other events filling up the calendar there is not possibly another day to reschedule.

Well that was a monster of a day, awesome sail round the islands in some seriously solid breeze, and the occasional big swell ( cough 18 kts cough)

Huge thanks to race committee, didn,t look overly comfortable on the committie boat in the conditions, your efforts were much appreciated

From our point of view, given the forecast and wind that came through, finishing in the daylight was the high on the priority list, so we were happy with the start time.

Cheers

The challenging days are often the most rewarding - this was the case for RB today - lit the boat up after months of light winds and couldn't stop grinning. Nice also to have a good time in a breeze that's too extreme for the AC :)

And got the live AC race updates on the radio...

Bit of bad luck for ETNZ means another Sunday at the club watching the racing with your mates - come down to RYC to watch the racing tomorrow on our big screens, club opens at 0700, racing starts around 0800.

Thanks RB. A lot of effort was made by a lot of people to make the right decision for the majority of skippers. Our instant experts are normally most conspicuous by their absence when there is work to be done or decisions to be made.

I was one of the people who voted to keep the 0905 start time. The forecast was for worse conditions after dark and starting at 12noon would have pushed our finish time into what turned out to be 30plus knots and rain. the 0905 start time ment we could have a settling rum on outragous fortune as the rain came in.

As for the race itself, knot little boat conditions with a hell beat to billygoat in a 22fter it was wet and lumpy, however getting there just behind a ross 35 and a SR 26 was a nice result, the cracked sheets ride across to gannet was fast and wet, the sprint down the back side in those waves was stunning, :D caught a couple of beauties. the reach through the islands had us planning most of the time and the easy reach home made the rum taste sweeter. It's a pitty that the 727's fell by the way side. we were looking forward to a better fight from them - maybe next time.
