It has washed ashore in Te Ikaamaru Bay - a relatively isolated area of the south coast - and Police search and rescue staff are currently making their way to it. Information is sought from anyone who may have any knowledge of the vessel or who might have been on it. Anyone with information is asked to call: Wellington Police on 04 381 2000. rigger 47
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5298128 ... Wellington A yacht found washed up on Wellington's south coast drifted there from D'Urville Island after breaking its moorings. Police had sent search and rescue staff to look for potential survivors after another boat discovered the badly damaged nine-metre yacht at Te Ikaamaru Bay, south of Makara, at about 11am this morning. However, Wellington maritime police managed to track down the name of the catamaran - Eos I - and discovered it had run aground on D'Urville Island in May, central communications centre Inspector Paul Jermy said. "It was towed to a mooring and might have broken that mooring and drifted." The shortest distance between Te Ikaamaru Bay and D'Urville Island is about 75km, a route that could have taken the yacht within kilometres of the Interislander route across Cook Strait. Police had not been able to contact the boat's Australian owners. Mr Jermy said he was pleased police had been able to solve the mystery of the yacht's origins. "The concern was that there may have been someone in it. "We were starting to ramp things up a bit." Ad Feedback
