Paper Tiger North Island Champs, Turangi 22/23 Feb

The 2013 Paper Tiger North Island Championship regatta was sailed at Stump Bay, Lake Taupo last weekend. Numbers were down on previous years, with just 21 boats making the start line. Four races were sailed Saturday, in a freshening nor'westerly breeze which built to around 15 knots during the afternoon. The warm breeze and a bit of chop made for great lake sailing.

Sunday was Turangi "business as usual", with about 5 knots at best producing close racing which suited the lighter skippers. Personal highlights were a first time wins on Saturday for New Plymouth's Stuart Taylor on "Gray Power", and for Howick's Les Gallagher on Sunday, sailing his new and beautifully self built "Arriba!".

After seven races, overall honours went to Scott Pedersen, Napier 1st, Les Gallagher, Howick 2nd and Ian Maclennan, Takapuna 3rd. The PT Freshwater series continues with the Mighty River Power Centreboard Regatta at Taupo on the 9/10 March.

Over Easter, the 2013 Swire Shipping Paper Tiger Catamaran International Championships will be held at Muritai Yacht Club, Eastbourne. A fleet of 50 boats will compete, including 17 from Australia. Competition will be tight, with Nelson's Dave Shaw looking to retain his individual title and the NZ Team looking to take out the double, not achieved since 1981.
