Hartley 16 Nats

Over last weekend Manuku Yacht and Motor Boat Club hosted the Blackheart Hartley 16 Nats, the 48th running of them. While Friday weather made a bit of a mess they got in 8 races overseen by PRO Kim Ardmore.

First place went to new Nat Champ team of Robin Williams and Derek Hickman in 'Shacking Laundry'. Second place went to another Manukau crew of Gareth and Mike Insley 'Bizarre' with New Plymouth's defending champion Alan Holdt and Wayne Julian 'Tight Fit' third.

The races were 40-50mins long and the bigger finish line gaps were 2.5mins showing just how close the racing was in the 21 boat fleet. The assembled spectators loved it.

The phrase 'It's not how fast you go it's the quality of the racing' was heard often over the 3 days as the boats mixed it up big time.... as was 'More beer please'. Over the last few years a lot of newer and younger sailors have been getting into them and have pushed the fleet hard making it very very competitive.

If you haven't seen these boats lately you will be surprised at just how flash some are and be even more surprised at what they are doing with the sails, some real creative stuff happening. One even had a big name loft string sails but then the winning boat built it's own sails in their garage.
