  1. ORION II WINS THE 96th LIPTON CUP

    Lipton cup 400.jpg

What a fabulous day and an Awesome Race !

12 Mullet Boats lined up on the Start Line for what was promising to be a hard fought race, the fleet didn't disappoint the good sized spectator fleet.

After a great start Martin Robertson led his team aboard Orion II taking the lead going into 1st mark and held it all the way to the finish to give Orion II both the Line and Handicap win. They prepared well then sailed very smart.

Congratulations to Mike Thompson and Crew on board Scullet who sailed fantastically taking 2nd Line and 2nd Handicap

Well done to Ben Freedman and Crew on board the 1913 built Valeria with 3rd on Line.

Rob Warring and Crew on board Rangi Manu had a great race coming in with a 3rd on Handicap Win, even after coming very close to capsizing and sinking at one stage.

As the class expands it's followers the fleet included 2 lady Helmspersons and many crew, Annie on her and Rob’s Buona Sera, Wendy on Suzie’s Tao Too and Suzie crewed on her other boat Snatcher.

The Lipton Cup is NZ yachting oldest competed for trophy that is sailed for in 22ft (6.7mt) L Class yachts which are commonly referred to as Mullet Boats. Some of the race fleet are now over 100 years old and are still very competitive. The Logan designed Valeria was launched 104 years ago but that was no barrier to her making 3rd in the hands of Ben and his team.

It was a superb race great for all participating boats and for the large number of spectators.

  3. To our fellow Yachting and boating enthusiasts,

Martin Robertson and I have taken on the responsibility of restoring one of the most well known and significant historical yachts ever to sail the Auckland harbour. She is the 22ft mullet boat Tamariki, built in 1934 and winner of 13 Lipton Cups along with countless other victories in her long racing career. With the 100th Lipton Cup coming up in 2021 we felt it appropriate that she be restored to her former race winning glory in time for her to join her for this coming and prestigious Auckland yacht racing event. As two professional boat builders we consider it an honour to have the opportunity to action this project and bring it to a successful conclusion.

Please check out the link below that takes you to our givealittle page, follow our progress and perhaps make a donation. Please feel free to pass on the link to your associates and friends and thanks for your interest.

  4. A fun weekend even if the weather package we ordered failed a bit yesterday.

Good close racing and very close on handicaps due to Mark Racetracks magnificent work.

Lots of fun and some good antics. Must say one of the Race teams favourites was the low level aerobatic display but on by Keith of Manawa fame while trying sort of the dingy outboard mechanism, how he stayed up right and dry during that is beyond the assembled crews having breaky on the beach.

Still plenty of time to jump into the Series any one who is thinking about it.

    The results from the weekend.

  6. Tamariki - L 11

Designed by Chas Collings and built by Collings and Bell in 1934.

Thirteen times Lipton Cup winner 1935 - 1968.

    Tamariki old.jpg

Tamariki is about to be reborn and to once again take her place in the resurgent L Class Mullet Boat racing fleet.

Tamariki is one of the most well known racing boats in the Auckland yachting scene. She is also the most famous mullet boat ever built, with far and away the most impressive race record including thirteen Lipton Cup wins and twenty-one back to back wins in her best racing season.
Tamariki is about to be restored to her race winning form, once again to join her sisters on the race track and with the ultimate goal of another tilt at glory, The one hundredth Lipton Cup!

We have just taken possession of Tamariki from Russell Irwin, who has been her custodian for the last little while and ensured her protection and safekeeping for such a time as this. We are both boat-builders and mullet boat enthusiasts and have been involved in the class since the 1970's. Our intent is to restore her hull to its original classic looks, faithful to the Chas Collings design and style but using modern materials and techniques, as was done with the highly successful 'Valeria' L 8. She will be fitted out with an up-to-date modern Bermuda rig and equipment. The end result will, we believe, be true to her and her class origins and also to her designer, builders and custodians of the past. She will be the classic Tamariki - a high performance, race competitive Mullet Boat.

    Tamariki.jpg

We hope that his project will whet the appetite and imagination of Ponsonby Cruising Club members and all who have had the pleasure of her company in the past. We also hope she will be a rallying point of common interest for all who are interested in seeing this great boat sailing again.

Please contact either Rob or Martin, should you wish to contribute in any way, or have any queries or suggestions in that regard... or even just a bit of encouragement. Thank you for your interest.

Classic Yacht and Launch Exhibition: Celebrating the Mullet Boat

Following last year’s very successful Des Townson Exhibition, the Tino Rawa Trust is this year celebrating the ‘Mullet Boat’ as part of their ‘Classic Yacht and Launch Exhibition’ series.

From humble fishing boat to one of the most recognisable yachts on Auckland Harbour, the Mullet boat has become a significant part of New Zealand's maritime history.

This annual public exhibition has free entry and will be held in the Karanga Plaza, Viaduct Harbour on Saturday 8 October & Sunday 9 October from 10am to 4pm. The exhibition will showcase the stories behind these iconic yachts including the designers, boat builders and famous boats. Informative displays will explain what elevated these yachts from ordinary beginnings to cult classics.

Rafted up and accessible to the public will be some of the finest examples of ‘Mulleties’ including ‘Buena Sera’ (Eric Wing), ‘Melita’ (Percy Vos), ‘Valeria’ (Arch Logan), ‘Snatcher’ (Beau Birdsall), ‘Tamatea’ (Chris McMullen), ‘Martana’ (Martin Robertson), ‘Nomad’ (Logan) and ‘Corona’ (Charles Collings)

A special part of the exhibition will be the interactive display of ‘Tamariki’ which will be under-going the initial start of her restoration. New owners Rob Warring and Martin Robertson are starting the lengthy restoration of her in time for the 100th Lipton Cup in 2021. Martin will be sharing traditional boat building skills to the public as well as discussing the restoration of ‘Tamariki’.

Mullet boat owners and other classic yacht enthusiasts will also be on hand to share their stories and memories of this unique New Zealand yacht.

Previous ‘Classic yacht and launch Exhibitions celebrated designers such as Des Townson, Jim Young, Jack Brooke, Bob Stewart and Col Wild.

This event by the Tino Rawa Trust is supported by Panuku Development Auckland, Ponsonby Cruising Club and the Classic Yacht Association of NZ, Lighthouse Marine, Altex Coatings, NZ Marine, Viaduct Harbour and CityGuard
