ex Elly 258
Anyone interested in Idle Alongs, pop along to Birkenhead Wharf this weekend. Start line is right off the wharf so should be great for spectators.

Guest
Saturday was great - see photos on http://groups.google.com/group/idlealongassociationofnz/edit/moffat-cup-2010 Tsunami warning caused Sunday racing to be cancelled. May reschedule the fourth and fifth races - committee is conferring now. Wonderful to meet all the old IA skippers and crew that came down to Birkenhead to watch the event. We are not aware of any IAs for sale just now. We post any we are aware of on the IA website. We are also starting a building programme to support people who would like to build using the technique that was perfected in the 1990s to build a hull in 40 hours using stitch and glue from a female mould. These boats gained 1st and 3rd place at the weekend races.

Guest
Good close racing with the oldest boats from the 1940s and 50s and the newest at least 50 years younger than that! You know its a good regatta when competitors are helping each other rig, repair and fine tune each others' boats. And good to see too some of the boats adopting the original 3-up crew with the addition of a son or daughter to pull ropes. Boatbuilder Gary Matthews is able to build new plywood hulls and the expectation is new boats fully rigged with spars and sails could be put together for not much more than $10K. Pretty good when you consider that while the hull is only 12'8" long, it is over 18' from the tip of the bowsprit to the end of the boom and 6' wide!
