Update.

Cowes Week Limited has been in contact with the hospital, the owner of the boat, and Associated British Ports (ABP) since the collision between a tanker and the racing yacht Atalanta earlier this afternoon. They are delighted to confirm that the hospital has discharged the injured crew member.

An official investigation on the incident will be carried out in due course.

A collision occurred this afternoon at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week between the Class 4 boat Atalanta and an incoming tanker. One member of the crew was knocked overboard and is OK. A further crew member has been injured and has been taken to hospital.

Cowes Week Limited is working closely with the emergency services and providing every support to the boat and its crew.

Even if the trimmer had pulled the sheet on, and even if they had made it, they should STILL have had the book thrown at them by the harbourmaster and the courts. There's an exclusion zone around vessels over 500 tonnes for a reason, and if you "just make it" across the bow of a ship you should get absolutely no mercy.

In Auckland Harbour the rules is:

The 500 Ton Rule

In areas near the approaches to harbours and ports, charts will show where all vessels must keep well clear of ships over 500 tons. Even if the ship is overtaking, stay at least 500 metres clear ahead and 100 metres from sides of all ships.

It is not uncommon in the Solent, especially during Cowes Week, for a ship to have a pilot boat ahead with flashing lights, sirens etc. You are not allowed to pass between the pilot and the ship.

I would love to hear the conversation on board as they were approaching the ship. "Yeah, yeah, yeah....Nah."

That guy is going to get it!
