Two Victorian sailors have been rescued after their yacht ran aground in rough seas near Flinders Island in Bass Strait.

Sixty-six-year-old Bruce Rodwell and his wife, from Warrenwood, east of Melbourne, were sailing around Tasmania when their 40-foot yacht ran aground on East Kangaroo Island.

Mal Larson from Australian Sea and Rescue says the pair's emergency beacon was detected about 3:15am this morning.

"The people were able to get off the boat and onto the island itself, they activated their emergency beacon," he said.

Acting Sergeant Scott Bailey says Tasmania Police sent a rescue helicopter.

"It's fairly rough in the area, there's a lot of wind and our boat can't be deployed," he said.

The pair have been taken to the Whitemark Medical Centre on Flinders Island suffering from mild hypothermia.

Rough seas and high winds are preventing the couple's yacht from being salvaged.
