Artemas needing modifications

After a training run against Oracle they are now going to do some modifications to the boat as they realise that they are slow against the cup defenders. The guys over at SA reckon that this has been coming around for months. I wonder if Russell is going to be eating his words shortly about EMTNZ standing no chance against Artemis

Percy, Loic Peyron, Cayard... Schnack...

Don't write Artemis off. Sailing Anarchy are great, but they are unashamedly bias to Oracle. They WANT Artemis to be a dog.

There's plenty of time yet.

Luckily Artemis have got 3 months up their sleeves while EMTNZ and Prada are being shipped to SF to work on modifications. Im assuming that they would be slower and point higher than the foiling boats downwind which means they have to find more speed to combat it so they dont get run down on every downwind leg? I wonder how quick there boat is reaching and beating?

What about them being slower than Oracle upwind as well as downwind? 600m over a 3Nm run is a pasting...

Any guesses when are they going to pull the pin and walk away?

I will give you 10 to 1 on odds that they will not pull the pin and walk away until they are eliminated, unless they suffer irreparable catastrophic damage at some point.

Keep guessing.

You can't compare apples with oranges. They have not been trying to foil. It's not in foiling mode.

The 2nd boat is being built in Sweden and they will not confirm whether the boat be a foiling boat like the others.

Lastest statement from Paul.

Quote

"Writing in his blog, Cayard doesn't reveal whether the team will opt for a fully foiling AC72, or if the Swedish America's Cup Challenger will stay in partial foiling mode, where the leeward foil produces some lift, sufficient to reduce the displacement and drag of the leeward hull, but not sufficient for full flight as the other three teams have been able to demonstrate."

"Foiling has a cost in term of the amount of drag produced by the dagger-boards. So far, Artemis has not pursued fully foiling. It will be interesting to see which strategy pans out. "

" These boats are overpowered, fragile and as we all know, the San Francisco Bay is very windy in July and August. The management of the asset and maintenance and spares planning is going to play a big part. Having the fastest boat is of little use if it can’t get around the track. The interesting part of this Cup is being faced with choices that we never had to make before. "
