Solar Flares

Recommended Posts

There is a Solar Storm currently working on the Suns surface and as the Sun rotates, this storm is slowly coming around to face Earth. The last couple of days has seen three eruptions or Coronal Mass Discharges in the "X" class, (which means major). These blasts are the most powerful the Sun has produced so far in the current activity cycle. 2013 is supposedly the peak year.

I tried to get on the Sun activity website today to get an update, but it is down. Possibly too much interest at what is happening may have crashed the site. Anyway, if we do get a good blast, it will make GPS very problematic and Radio communication could be disrupted. Just depends on if one hits us and what strength it is. Nothing to worry about as such. But lower South Island may get a spectacular Aurora and it could easily stretch as far as North Island Skies. So keep an eye on the night sky.
