jay 3
The attached photo shows a transom hung Lotus 9.2 rudder with visible vertical cracking through the glass/resin layer extending from aft of the upper gudgeon down to the waterline. I haven't inspected below the waterline yet. There is no evidence of cracking on the other side. I suspect this would be from the rotational forces placed on the rudder, and that the visible surface cracking is indicative of deeper cracking of the rudder stock, which could lead to failure at some point? I'm interested in whether others have encountered this, and thoughts on repairing or replacing, including any guesses on cost of a replacement rudder if that is the likely outcome? Thanks! Guest
jay it will be repairable, but you will need to get it dry first. typically you will of had some water ingress via the fastenings and then with time as the wood has soaked it up and loadings it has burst it seems so to speak.
