Buhk 20, class 1 oh 1

I am babying along an Buhk 20 that I got from Noah. I have a few questions tht someone might be able to help with:

1.

I have just done an oil change, but note that the dipstick 'stopper' the inverted cup at the top, actually can slide up and down. Hence its accurancy is in question. There are 2 points of reference for it... a 'bulge' close to the very top near the handle, and a shiny area, about 2cm below that. Does anyone know the length of the dipstick to where the cup should be?

 

Obviously it effects how much oil should go in... dont want to over/under fill.

 

2.

Re did the thermostat gaskets. Used some gasket compound due to corrosion on the manufold housing it sits on. Inside the thermostat housing is a round rubber seal/seat. Should this be sealed in with gasket goo or does it have to move as the thermostat opens and closes?
